COLD CASE (BLACK SCREEN) the following story is fictional and does not depict any actual person or event. CUE SONG: "The Sign", Ace of Base COLD OPEN INT. GIRLS LOCKER ROOM-1994-EVENING DATE STAMP: OCTOBER 17, 1994 18-year-old Melissa Jacobs is taking sweats out of her locker and putting them on over her cross country uniform, while 19-year-old Amy Cross is standing by her with only a towel. AMY CROSS What are you doing? Arent you going to take a shower before you get dressed? MELISSA JACOBS What for? Its Monday and the only place I gotta be is the library and then back in my dorm room to study. AMY CROSS Great race by the way. We slowed down toward the end but really picked it up at the last minute. MELISSA JACOBS Yeah, Im surprised I lasted as long as did with all the slacking off we did over the weekend. Melissa goes to grab her bag off the bench and knocks it off. She kneels down to pick it up, crawling partway under the bench and backs up into 19-year-old Emily Dawson, who steps out of her way. EMILY DAWSON Watch it you bitch! You already took my place. You dont have to take me out. Melissa stands up.

MELISSA JACOBS I didnt see you.

Melissa sees Emily is already out of sight. AMY CROSS Dont worry about her. Shes upset you beat her time today. Somebody had to. MELISSA JACOBS Im not going to let it bother me. I got better things to worry about this week and one of them is passing this stupid Sociology class. Melissa packs up her bag and heads toward the door. MUSIC FADES FADE OUT. FADE IN. EXT. WOODS-1994-NIGHT Melissa is shown lying in a shallow grave, as someone not in camera shot is throwing dirt on top of her. CUT TO: INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT-1994-NIGHT A file labeled Melissa Jacobs is placed into a file folder with Missing Persons on it and is placed into a filing cabinet and shut. CUT TO: EXT. WOODS-PRESENT DAY-DAY 52-year-old Liz Hendrickson is standing on her back porch calling for her dog, Duke, while holding a cup of coffee. LIZ HENDRICKSON Duke! Duke! Get over here! German shepherd is shown running from the woods carrying something in its mouth. (CONTINUED)

INT. LIZ HENDRICKSONS HOUSE-PRESENT DAY-DAY LIZ HENDRICKSON Duke! You better not be bringing any dead squirrels or birds into this house. Liz walks down hall, enters bedrooms. Duke is on bed, chewing on something. Closeup shows its the skeletal remains of a human foot. Camera pans to Liz who gasps then pans to floor where coffee cup hits the floor and shatters. CUT TO: EXT. WOODS-PRESENT DAY-DAY Detectives Lilly Rush and Scotty Valens are walking through the woods up to where the police have taped up a crime scene. Lieutenant John Stillman is standing by the tape, along with shovels and piles of dirt. LILLY RUSH Heard a dog gave its owner quite a shock when it came home with the victims foot. Scotty gestures toward a woman standing off to the side, visibly shaken, talking to detectives, holding a leash attached to a german shepherd. SCOTTY VALENS Lady over there. What a shock to find out to have lived here five years not knowing there is a body practically in your backyard. LILLY RUSH Nothing but woods for miles. Perfect place to hide a body. JOHN STILLMAN College ID was buried with the victim. Melissa Jacobs, 19-years-old, reported missing back Fall of 94. Detectives look down at the grave where a decomposed body lays.

LILLY RUSH Looks like something is shoved into her mouth. JOHN STILLMAN Looks to be undergarmets or stockings. Well know more when we get the body to the lab. LILLY RUSH We know her name and what happened to her all these years. Now we just to need to figure out who wanted her dead and why. FADE TO END OF TEASER ROLL TITLE CREDITS (COMMERCIAL SET) FADE IN. INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT-BULLPEN-PRESENT DAY-DAY Lilly Rush, Scotty Valens, John Stillman, and Detective Will Jeffries are sitting around the desk reviewing the old Jacobs case. LILLY RUSH Melissa Jacobs was a freshman at the college. Ran cross country. Carried a 3.7 for what little of the semester she completed. SCOTTY VALENS Last to see her was her roommate and fellow teammate, Amy Cross, who said she went out on that Friday night just to go for a run and that was the last she saw of her. That was October 21, 1994. WILL JEFFRIES Doesnt sound like the wild party type if she goes for a run on a Friday night.

JOHN STILLMAN Friends, family, teammates, and classmates were all interviewed but police came up with no leads. She just disappeared. LILLY RUSH Perhaps we should re interview this Amy Cross. Perhaps in 15 years, she might open up more about anything if Melissa Jacobs did have another life that we dont know about. CUT TO: EXT. HOUSE OF AMY CROSS, NOW AMY OWENS-DAY INT. HOUSE OF AMY OWENS-DAY Lilly Rush and Will Jeffries sit on the couch across from Amy Owens who is seated. A brief flash shows a 19-year-old Amy and flashes back to her current age of 35. WILL JEFFRIES Mrs. Owens, we understand that you were friends with Melissa Jacobs. You were roommates. AMY OWENS Why, yes. Weve been best since high school and went college together. I guess never fully understand why left. Um, Amy, this but body was far from friends on to I could she just

LILLY RUSH Im really sorry to say Melissa never left. Her found on the woods not to the campus.

AMY OWENS Oh, my god, I guess I never or never wanted to think that something happened to her. I guess it hurt more to think shed just leave everyone. Who would do such a thing to her?

WILL JEFFRIES Thats what we want to figure out. Can you think of anyone that had a grudge against Melissa? Any teammates? Did she have a boyfriend? AMY OWENS No, she never had a boyfriend or at least none that I knew of. Everyone liked her. LILLY RUSH Did she have any run ins with anyone? Was there anyone on the team that may have had words with her? AMY OWENS Um, one girl had some problems with Melissa, but she was all talk. She would never physically harm her. WILL JEFFRIES We need a name. Were just going to ask some questions. We have to if we are going to find any leads. AMY OWENS Emily Dawson. One day after a race, she snapped at Melissa, but nothing more. Melissa never let it get to her. WILL JEFFRIES Thank you for your time, Mrs. Owens. If we can think of any more questions, well let you know. AMY OWENS Thank you, detectives. I really hope you find who did this to her. Lilly and Will stand up and head to the door. CUT TO:

INT. DEPARTMENT STORE-DAY Lilly and Will approach a woman stocking shelves. A brief flash shows a 19-year-old Emily Dawson and then back to the woman. LILLY RUSH Emily Dawson. EMILY DAWSON Yes, may I help you with something? WILL JEFFRIES Philadelphia PD. Were here to ask you some questions about Melissa Jacobs. EMILY DAWSON Yeah, what about her? I ran cross country with her back in college. Then she just up and left. LILLY RUSH We found Melissas body in the woods by the campus. We know that you had some words with her the week she disappeared. EMILY DAWSON Well, yes, we did have words, but the following race I made an effort to go over to her and apologize. I was angry with myself. WILL JEFFRIES Angry enough to kill her? EMILY DAWSON No. I admit I was a bitch to her, but that was stupid stuff just to intimidate her. I was mad she beat my time, but I was more angry with myself. I liked her. We became friends. FLASHBACK TO:

EXT.PHILADELPHIA COLLEGE-EARLY EVENING -1994 CUE SONG: "Cannonball" The Breeders A group of girls are standing around, stretching, and gearing up for the upcoming race. Emily Dawson walks over to Melissa Jacobs who is sitting and stretching and extends her hand. EMILY DAWSON Melissa. MELISSA JACOBS Yes EMILY DAWSON Id like to apologize for my behavior on Monday. I was mad at myself for not running well and I guess I took it out on you. MELISSA JACOBS No worries. We were all stressed. It was a tough race. EMILY DAWSON Im sorry. You deserved it. You ran good. Im just hoping we can be friends. Were teammates and we need to work together. MELISSA JACOBS Yeah, I agree. Thanks. Emily looks up and sees a young man standing off to the side, staring at Melissa. EMILY DAWSON Melissa, who is that guy standing there? Melissa looks up, sees him, and then turns away, continuing her stretching. MELISSA JACOBS I dont know, but I see him everywhere. At the library, coffee shop. Ive never talked to him, but he seems to watch me. Usually with at least one or two girls hanging around him.

EMILY DAWSON He seems to be interested in you. He is cute. MELISSA JACOBS Yeah, whatever, but hes not really my type. He seems to be a player. The girls start to line up at the starting line. CUT TO: MUSIC FADES. INT. DEPARTMENT STORE-PRESENT DAY-DAY Lilly and Will continue interviewing Emily. LILLY RUSH Any idea who this guy was? EMILY DAWSON No. But Ive seen him around campus and like Melissa had said. He seemed to be a player, always seen with at least one or two girls. He did give me the creeps though. It seemed weird that hed be watching a cross country match. Only close friends and family ever seemed interested in coming. WILL JEFFRIES Thank you for your time, Miss Dawson. If we have any more questions, well let you know. EMILY DAWSON Thank you, detectives. I really hope they catch who did this to her. Melissa really was a sweet girl. Lilly and Will turn and walk away as Emily goes back to stocking the shelves. INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT-PRESENT DAY-DAY Lilly, Will, Scotty, and Detective Kat Miller are standing around a desk looking over at the files. John Stillman approaches them.

CONTINUED: LILLY RUSH What have you got, boss? JOHN STILLMAN Lab results came back for Melissa Jacobs and it appears she had sexual intercourse before she died but the body was too decomposed to determine if it was consentual or not. Also, whoever did kill her, stuffed her panties in her mouth, either before or after she was killed. But that was not all I found. SCOTTY VALENS Whats that? JOHN STILLMAN I looked into some old unsolved cases dated around the same time as Melissas disappearance and back in April of 1994, a Chelsea Jennings was found not too far in the woods where Melissa was found. She had been buried, bot not well enough as some hikers had found her. LILLY RUSH You think there is a connection? JOHN STILLMAN Chelsea was sexually assaulted and her panties had been stuffed into her throat. She was bruised and had multiple stab wounds in her chest and neck. Police had no leads. SCOTTY VALENS Looks like we could be looking into a serial killer. JOHN STILLMAN 92, another body was found near the campus in a heavily vegetated area by the railroad tracks. Body of Lacey Byron. She left to go to a party on the night of September 25, 1992 from her dorm room and was found a week later. Same thing. Friends and classmates were interviewed and police came up with no leads. Both cases went cold.

WILL JEFFRIES Anything after Melissa Jacobs? JOHN STILLMAN I looked into it, but it seemed whoever did this just stopped. Look into any cases of assault that might have been reported on campus around that time. All three victims were students at the college, so our killer has to be connected somehow. LILLY RUSH Will do, boss. JOHN STILLMAN Perhaps with a fresh set of eyes and new technology, we could finally solve these cases to rest and bring some sort of justice to these families. FADE OUT.
