NURSING AS A PROFESSION
INTRODUCTION:
 Nursing is a noble profession that combines compassion, skill, and dedication.
 Nursing has been called the oldest of the arts and the youngest of the professions. Today
nursing emerged as a learned profession, that is both a science and an art.
 The term ‘Nurse’ evolve from the Latin word nutrix, which means to nourish or to cher-
ish.
 Florence Nightingale laid the foundations of professional nursing after the Crimean War.
She contributions to health care started during the Crimean War in 1854.

DEFINITIONS OF NURSING
“Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of ill-
ness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response,
and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities and populations.”
-(American Nurses Association)

CRITERIA FOR NURSING PROFESSION


A. N. M.
Course Duration – 2 years

 The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on or before 31st December of
the year in which admission is sought.
 The maximum age for admission shall be 35 years.
 The minimum educational requirements shall be 10 + 2 in Arts (Mathematics,
Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Economics, Political Science, His -
tory, Geography, Business Studies, Accountancy, Home Science, Sociology, Psy -
chology, and Philosophy) and English Core/English Elective or Science or Health
care Science - Vocational stream ONLY passing out from recognized Board.
 Student shall be medically fit.
 Students qualified in 10+2 Arts or Science examination conducted by National
Institute of Open School.
 Student shall be admitted once in a year.

G. N. M.
Course Duration – 3 and 1/2 years

1. Minimum education eligibility criteria for admission to GNM:

 10+2 with English and must have obtained a minimum of 40% at the quali -
fying examination and English individually for any recognized board. Can -
didates are also eligible from State Open School recognized by State Gov -
ernment and National Institute of Open School (NIOS) recognized by Cen -
tral Government. However Science is preferable.
 10+2 with English having 40% of marks in vocational ANM course from
the school recognized by Indian Nursing council.
 10+2 with English having 40% of marks in Vocational Stream-Health care
Science from a recognized CBSE board/Centre.
 Registered ANM with pass mark.

For foreign nationals

 The entry qualification equivalency i.e., 12th standard will be obtained by Asso -
ciation of Indian Universities, New Delhi. Institution, State Nursing Council will
be responsible to ensure that the qualification and eligibility will be equivalent to
what has been prescribed as above.

2. Reservation:

 For disabled candidates: 3% Disability reservation to be considered with a dis -


ability of locomotor to the tune of 40% to 50% of the lower extremity and other
eligibility criteria with regard to age and qualification will be same as prescribed
for each nursing programme.
Note: A committee to be formed consisting of medical officer authorized by med -
ical board of state government and a nursing expert in the panel which may decide
whether the candidates have the disability of locomotor of 40% to 50%.
 5% is relaxed for SC/ST candidates.
 Any other quotas as per the State Govt. under the reservation policy
Note: Quotas shall be included in the seats sanctioned and not above it..

3. Admission of students shall be once in a year.


4. Students shall be medically fit.
5. Minimum age for admission will be 17 years. (as on 31st December of that year) The
upper age limit is 35 yrs. For ANM/ for LHV, there is no age bar.

B. Sc. Nursing
Course Duration – 4 years

 The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on 31st December of the year in
which admission is sought.
 Minimum education:

 10+2 class passed with Science (PCB) & English Core/English Elec -
tive with aggregate of 45% marks from recognized board under
AISSCE/CBSE/ICSE/SSCE/HSCE or other equivalent Board.

 Student shall be medically fit.


 Students appearing in 10+2 examination in Science conducted by National Insti -
tute of Open School with 45% marks.
 Student shall be admitted once in a year.
Post Basic B. Sc. (N)
Course Duration – Regular: 2 yrs Distance: 3 yrs

 Passed the Higher Secondary or Senior Secondary or Intermediate or 10+2 or an


equivalent examination recognized by the university for this purpose. Those who
have done 10+1 in or before 1986, will be eligible for admission.
 Obtained a certificate in General Nursing and Midwifery and registered as
R.N.R.M. with the State Nurses Registration Council. A male nurse, trained be -
fore the implementation of the new integrated course besides being registered as a
nurse with State Nurses Registration Council, shall produce evidence of training
approved by Indian Nursing Council for a similar duration in lieu of midwifery in
any one of the following areas:

 O.T. Techniques
 Ophthalmic Nursing
 Leprosy Nursing
 TB Nursing
 Psychiatric Nursing
 Neurological and Neuro surgical Nursing
 Community Health Nursing
 Cancer Nursing
 Orthopedic Nursing

 Candidates shall be medically fit.


 Students shall be admitted once in a year.

M. Sc. (N)
Course Duration – 2 years

 The candidate should be a Registered Nurse and Registered midwife or equivalent


with any State Nursing Registration Council.
 The Minimum education requirements shall be the passing of: B.Sc. Nursing/
B.Sc. Hons. Nursing/Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing with minimum of 55% aggregate
marks.
 The candidate should have undergone in B.Sc. Nursing / B.Sc. Hons. Nursing /
Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing.
 Minimum one year of work experience after Basic B.Sc. Nursing.
 Minimum one year of work experience prior or after Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing.

MPhil Nursing
Course Duration :-2 years

 The following criteria are responsible for measuring the eligibility of candidates for
MPhil Nursing.

 Good academic marks in B.Sc. nursing and M.Sc. nursing degree.


 One should have secured at least 55% marks in their Master’s from an institution recog-
nized by Indian Nursing Council or equivalent in the subject, provided that the Master's
degree is obtained after taking the Bachelor's degree.
 Few colleges offer 5% relaxation in the marks for the applicants who belong to the cate-
gories of OBC/SBC/SC/ST/Physically handicapped.

Ph.D. Program in Nursing

Course Duration: -3 – 5 years

 Selection for the Ph.D. Program will be based on merit either by entrance or by M.Sc.
(Nursing) (minimum 60% marks).
 If the University opts to conduct entrance examination then selection for the Ph.D. Pro-
gram of the candidate will be based on

 Entrance test marks obtained out of 90 marks. (Minimum weightage pass


marks for entrance will be 60% of 90 i.e. 54).
 5 marks for candidates possessing M.Phil. in Nursing.
 5 marks weightage for publications.

1. Clinical Specialists
 Is a nurse who has completed a master’s degree in specialty and has considerable clinical
expertise in that specialty. She provides expert care to individuals, participates in educating
health care professionals and ancillary, acts as a clinical consultant and participates in re -
search.
2. Nurse Practitioner
 Is a nurse who has completed either as certificate program or a master’s degree in a spe-
cialty and is also certified by the appropriate specialty organization. She is skilled at making
nursing assessments, performing P. E., counseling, teaching and treating minor and self-
limiting illness.
3. Nurse-midwife
 A nurse who has completed a program in midwifery; provides prenatal and postnatal care
and delivers babies to woman with uncomplicated pregnancies.
4. Nurse anesthetist
 A nurse who completed the course of study in an anesthesia school and assess, prescribe,
deliver, and manage care during the preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative phases of
a patient’s operative/interventional procedure.
5. Nurse Educator
 A nurse usually with advanced degree, who beaches in clinical or educational settings,
teaches theoretical knowledge, clinical skills and conduct research.
6. Nurse Entrepreneur
 A nurse who has an advanced degree, and manages health-related business.
7. Nurse administrator
 A nurse who functions at various levels of management in health settings; responsible for
the management and administration of resources and personnel involved in giving patient
care.
