THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY
Marriage- matrimonial covenant by which a man and a woman establish
between themselves a partnership for a whole life
Spirituality- life in spirit who incorporates the Christian into the body of
Christ.
Matrimony as a Sacrament
• Established by the Creator and qualified by His laws.
• Rooted on conjugal covenant and irrevocable personal consent
• For the good of the spouses, their offsprings, and the society.
Matrimony
• ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and
education of children (CCC 1601).
• a divine institution, elevated by Christ to the dignity of a sacrament
• signifies the mystical union between Christ and His Church
• a visible sign of God’s faithful and fruitful love.
Impediments
• Lack of free consent
• Existing marriage bond
• Psychological incapacity
• Marrying a close relative (consanguinity)
Requirements
Baptism (Canon 1086, 1124–1129)
• At least one party must be a baptized Catholic.
• If marrying a non-Catholic Christian or a non-baptized person, special
permission or dispensation is required:
• Permission for mixed marriage (Catholic + baptized non-Catholic)
• Dispensation for disparity of cult (Catholic + non-baptized)
Free Consent (Canons 1057, 1095–1107)
• Both parties must enter marriage freely, knowingly, and without
coercion.
• Consent must not be simulated or conditioned on a future event.
• Psychological capacity must be present (Canon 1095).
Canonical Form (Canon 1108)
• The marriage must be celebrated before a properly delegated
priest or deacon and two witnesses.
• If not followed, the marriage is invalid unless dispensed (e.g., in mixed
marriages).
Pre-Cana or Marriage Preparation
• Required by most dioceses
• Includes:
• Theology of Marriage
• Communication skills
• Natural Family Planning (NFP)
• Conflict resolution
• Understanding canonical and sacramental nature
Civil Requirements
• The couple must fulfill civil/legal obligations for marriage in their
country (e.g., marriage license).
• These vary by jurisdiction but are typically handled in tandem with
the canonical process

It is a Germanic word that basically means spring season.
The Latin equivalent is “Quadragesima” which means forty (40) days.
