HUMAN SEXUALITY AND THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY

This module will help you about which you should be able to decide responsibly
and with integrity when you will be confronted
with issues and situations concerning your
sexuality and to explain that marriage is an
ongoing sacrament, a lasting commitment of a man and a woman to a lifelong
partnership, to celebrate their capacity for love and total dedication, and serves as
a witness to Christ’s love for the Church. Through the Sacrament of Matrimony, the
Church teaches that Jesus gives the strength and grace to live the real meaning of
marriage.

SCRIPTURE: JESUS REPEATS THE TEACHINGS IN GENESIS

Jesus had now finished what he wanted to say, and he left Galilee and came
into the territory of Judaea on the far side of the Jordan. 2 Large crowds followed
him and he healed them there.3 Some Pharisees approached him, and to put him to
the test they said, 'Is it against the Law for a man to divorce his wife on any pretext
whatever?'
He answered, 'Have you not read that the Creator from the beginning made
them male and female 5 and that he said: This is why a man leaves his father and
mother and becomes attached to his wife, and the two become one flesh?
6
They are no longer two, therefore, but one flesh. So then, what God has
united, human beings must not divide.' 7 They said to him, 'Then why
did Moses command that a writ of dismissal should be given in cases of
divorce?'8 He said to them, 'It was because you were so hard-hearted,
that Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but it was not like this from the
beginning. Matthew 19:1-8

GRADE 8- THE CHURCH AND THE SACRAMENT
THE SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE
“By Virtue of the Sacramentality of their marriage, spouses are bound to one
another in the most profoundly indissoluble manner. Their belonging to
each other is the real representation, by means of the Sacramental sign, of
the very relationship of Christ with the Church.”
Familiaris Consortio, 1

The essential points of the above passage are taken up in the following themes that
expound on the three values of marriage which St. Augustine spoke of.
 Marriage as a Sacrament
 Married Love and Faithfulness

SEXUALITY: TO PROTECT AND RESPECT

Sexuality should be viewed and understood as part of personhood, deserving of
respect because of the person’s dignity and value. Sexual integrity helps a person
act and decide truthfully, ethically, and responsibly. It requires temperance and
