CHAPTER 1: JESUS AS PROPHET
Lesson 2: JOHN TH BAPTIST, THE LAST AND THE GREATEST OF THE
PROPHETS

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
In this lesson, you will learn the ff::
1. Who is John the Baptist?
2. What was the purpose of the john the Baptist?
3. What does immersion in water symbolize?
4. In what way should the people prepare the way of the Lord?
5. Mary Magdalene is called “The Penitent”

INTRODUCTION/MOTIVATION:
John the Baptist is a mysterious figure in the New Testament. He was famous in his
own day, even before he became the herald of Christ. We even know about him from outside
the New Testament. John was related to Jesus through their mothers. He served as the
forerunner or herald of the Messiah and was to prepare for him by fulfilling an Elijah-like role by
calling the nation to repentance. He also came to identify and announce the Messiah.
According to John the Baptist: “I myself did not know him; but for this I came baptizing with
water, that he might be revealed to Israel” John was arrested by Herod Antipas, the ruler of
Galilee, which included part of the wilderness near Jerusalem. It’s easy for us to think of John
the Baptist as simply the forerunner and herald of Christ, but he was quite famous in his own
right in preparing the way for the Lord.

INSTRUCTION/DISCUSSION:

A. Who is John the Baptist?


John the Baptist was the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth. Who prepared the way for the
coming of the messiah, he is known to be the last and the greatest among the prophets.

B. What was the purpose of the John the Baptist?


Prepare the way for Jesus ministry by calling to an awareness of their sins and
repentance. John pointed out Jesus with full clarity and humility where and who Jesus was.

C. What does immersion in water symbolize?


The immersion in water symbolizes or expresses, Change of heart and openness of
mind and spirit to welcome the messiah.

D. In what way should the people prepare the way of the Lord?
To follow the way to authentic conversion and repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Act of bathing in water as a sign of spiritual purification.

E. Mary Magdalene is called “the penitent.”

She felt great sorrow for her sinful life. After she followed Jesus she was considered
“the penitent” God’s unconditional love she experienced through forgiveness of her sins
and she never sinned again so that she called “the penitent”.

PRACTICE:

Activity# 1: Imagine that you are john the Baptist today. What message would you
preach to Filipino people to create change in the society as a whole? Write your message in a
half sheet of paper and be prepared to say to the class.

Activity# 2 kindly read the story of Mary Magdalene from the textbook and answer
those questions in the long pad.

two book marks with message about renewal or
conversion. Post or share the book mark in the social
media to your friends who need them the most.

Lesson 3: JESUS ACCOMPANIES GOD’S WORD WITH SIGNS AND DEEDS

INTRODUCTION/LESSON PREVIEW:
Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to
me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded
you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. The courage to go, the audacity
to make disciples for Jesus from followers of other lords and other religions, the authority to
baptize in the name of the Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, are all based on the rock solid
foundation of the words — and the reality — “All authority in heaven and on earth has been
given to me. All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son
except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son
chooses to reveal him.

INSTRUCTION/DISCUSSION:

A. How do Jews understand the world?


The Jews views the world as total expression of god’s power and creativity. All the good
things that happen are actually forms of miracles performed by God. For the Jews miracles
are not events but they are activities of Yahweh who control the universe

B. How does Peter represent the early church?


The early church represented by peter, looked at Jesus as a man of God sent to us with
miracles and wonders and signs as his credentials.

C. What is the affirmed by Jesus in many of his signs and miracles?


Based on catechism of Filipino Catholics 485, the direct connection between faith and
healing is clearly affirmed by Christ in many of his signs.

D. How are the miracles presented in the New Testament?


There are three Greek terms which are used to refer to the miracles of Jesus in the New
Testament
 Teras : Marvel , it implies that Jesus’s deeds and good works led people to marvel
at God’s Power.
 Dynamis: Dynamite, Jesus action shows power.
 Semeion : Sign , there were symbolic actions that led to the presence of God.

E. Who is Barnabas?
Barnabas was a Cypriot Jew. Named an apostle in Acts 14:14, he and Paul the Apostle
undertook missionary journeys together and defended Gentile converts against the
Judaizers. They travelled together making more converts (c. 45–47), and participated in the
Council of Jerusalem. Barnabas means son of encouragement.

Activity# 1: if you were blind, mute, or paralytic in a real-life situation, what do you think
would be your prayer to God? Write your prayer in a long pad paper and, prepare to share it to
the class.

Activity# 2; Kindly read the story of Barnabas from the textbook and answer those
questions in the long pad. See the page number 59 and 60 and answer the activity
