KiCad PCB Design - Quick Start Guide
1. Install KiCad
Download and install KiCad from the official website: https://www.kicad.org/download/.
Available for Windows, Linux, and macOS.
2. Create a New Project
Open KiCad and create a new project.
It will generate a .pro file and folder structure.
3. Schematic Design (Eeschema)
Open Eeschema tool:
- Add components from the library
- Use 'Place wire' to connect pins
- Annotate the schematic
- Run Electrical Rules Check (ERC)
4. Assign Footprints
Assign footprints using CvPcb tool:
- Each symbol in the schematic must be linked to a physical footprint.
5. PCB Layout (Pcbnew)
Open Pcbnew:
- Import netlist or schematic
- Arrange components
- Route tracks
- Use DRC (Design Rule Check) to validate
6. Generate Gerber Files
Use Plot tool in Pcbnew to export Gerber files for PCB fabrication.
Also export drill files.

7. Preview and Order
Preview the design using GerbView.
You can upload files to manufacturers like JLCPCB, PCBWay, etc.
Tips:
- Save frequently
- Use grid alignment
- Label power and signals properly
- Follow spacing and clearance rules
