Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my interest in becoming a production team member at Highwire Coffee

Roasters.

Coffee has always been something that has made me happy, but recently I have realized that I want it to
be a much bigger part of my life and am now making an effort to move into the coffee industry.
Between the size of the company and the commitment to high quality, well sourced coffee; Highwire
feels like a perfect place to begin that journey. I have already begun my foray into roasting, learning to
roast on a Proaster and how to follow a production roast profile on Cropster, but I want a chance to be
in a coffee production environment and learn more about what it means to be part of the coffee
industry. Whether there is room to eventually take on more responsibility at Highwire or simply an
environment to learn in, I feel like Highwire would be a good fit for me and would help me further my
aspirations in the coffee industry.

I see so much potential in the world of coffee to improve people’s lives - both in our local communities
as well as the worldwide coffee community. Beyond the obvious way coffee producers can make people
happy with the coffee we roast and brew, it is important that we pay attention to everyone who had a
hand in producing our coffee as well. What I care about the most is making sure the work that I am
doing is making the lives of everyone involved better. Whether it is working with trusted importers
who make sure that the farmers across the world are being paid fairly for the coffee they produce, or
working directly with the wet mill/washing station to better understand production costs, we can find
many ways to improve the lives of everyone who contributes to producing the coffee we love.

Moreover, I feel that a coffee shop can be an intersection of art, food and community. As coffee
producers and public facing members of the community, we can share something we have made and
are proud of while creating human connections with people who appreciate the product we create.

I understand this is an entry level position full of hard work. I am eager to do what it takes to transition
into the coffee field, and I am not afraid of hard work. While I do not have any job experience in coffee,
I have worked collaboratively with coworkers as a paraeducator and have had to learn to work behind
the scenes in a food-services setting while working at the butcher. I believe this experience, along with
my experience roasting coffee myself, has prepared me well to transition into a coffee production
setting.

While I live in Portland now and have loved being immersed in the city’s extensive coffee culture, I am
eager to move back home to the Bay Area. Highwire was one of the roasting companies that first
introduced me to the idea of third wave coffee back when I was a teenager making my first ventures
into the world of coffee. It would be wonderful to bring my new coffee knowledge, experiences and
passion for great coffee to a familiar, loved place.

Thank you for your consideration,

Kathryn Holmquist-Moscato
