1. What is natural vegetation?
Ans: Natural vegetation refers to a plant community which has grown naturally without human aid.

2. Distinguish between flora and fauna.

1. All the plants of a particular region are 1. 1. The wildlife living in a particular area is
known as flora. called fauna.

2. There are 47000 species of plants found in 2. There are 89000 species of animals
India and fish found in India.

3. Give an account of the flowering and non- flowering plants in India.


Ans: There are 15,000 flowering plants found in India.
Ferns, algae and fungi are the non-flowering plants which are grown in India.

4. What are the factors affecting the distribution of plants and animals in India?
Ans: The factors affecting the distribution of plants and animals in India are relief(land), soil, climate
(temperature), photoperiod and precipitation.

5. How does relief affect the natural vegetation found in a region?


Ans: The variation in the landform and soil found in a region provide the base for different type of
vegetation.
For e.g.- the fertile plains are suitable for agriculture while the sandy soil support only small thorn and
shrubs.

6. How does an ecosystem form?


Ans: The nature of the plants in an area determines the animal life in that area. So, all the plants and
animals in an area are interdependent to each other and form an ecosystem.

7. What is a biome? On what basis are biomes identified?


Ans: A biome is a large ecosystem on land having distinct types of vegetation and animal life.
Biomes are identified on the basis of plants.

8. Give three points how forests are helpful to us.


Ans: Forests are helpful to us in the following ways:
i. They modify local climate.
ii. They control soil erosion.
iii. They support a variety of industries.
