    TheU.S.MerchantMarineAcademyisauniquefeatureofKingsPointandtheGreatNeck Peninsula.NoothertownonLongIslandcanclaimtobethesiteofoneofthefiveUnitedStatesService academies.Weareblessedtohavethisvenerableinstitutionhere.OnWednesday,attheinvitationof actingSuperintendentDr.ShashiKumar,Ijoinedothertown,villageandcommunityofficialsinDelano HalltodiscussthefutureoftheAcademy.Iampleasedtoreportthattherearenoplanstoclosethe Academy,andthatU.S.DepartmentofTransportationSecretaryRayLaHoodannouncedinMarchthat anadditional$54millionwouldbemadeavailableforcampusconstructionandrenovations. ThismeansthattheUSMMAwillthankfullyremainrightwhereitisattheendofSteamboat RoadandwillcontinuetowelcomemidshipmenfromallovertheCountryformanyyearstocome. Withthisinmind,IwritetoencourageallresidentstobecomemorefamiliarwiththeUSMMAandto supportthisimportantinstitutionanditsmidshipmen,facultyandstaff.SuperintendentKumarmade cleartousthathedesiresacloserrelationshipbetweentheAcademyandPeninsularesidents,and residentsshouldknowthattheyareencouragedtovisittheAcademytotouritsbeautifulandhistoric 82acrewatersidecampus.TheAcademygroundsareopentothegeneralpublicthroughouttheyear; daily,from8:00to4:30,exceptforfederalholidaysandthesummerandwinterleaveperiods.

    The AmericanMerchantMarineMuseumisalsopartofthecampusandcontainsafascinatingcollectionof nauticalartandartifacts.TheMuseumisopenTuesdaythroughFridayfrom10:00to3:00.The USMMAalsohasathrivingathleticprogram,andtheMarinershaveenjoyedsuccessinmanyNCAA DivisionIIIsports. AsidefromvisitingtheUSMAA,IencourageallfellowGreatNeckerstogreetmidshipmenwhen weseethemaroundtownandtomakethemfeelwelcome.Themidshipmenareourneighborsandwe shouldtreatthemassuch.Followinggraduation,midshipmenmustsatisfyaserviceobligationineither U.S.ArmedForcesReservedutyorasactivedutyofficersintheU.S.ArmedForces.Whatismore,many ofthemidshipmenareformerenlistedmembersoftheU.S.ArmedForces.Thatlevelofcommitmentto ourCountrysservicedemandsourrespectandgratitude.
