Honourable Margarett Best, Minister of Consumer Services Councillor Michael Thompson, City of Toronto Jamaica 50 Toronto Celebrations On midnight, August5, 1962, thousands of Jamaicans packed the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, to witness the final lowering of Britains Union Jack and the unfurling of the black, green and gold, to signify the birth of an independent Jamaica. The pride experienced by Jamaicans on Independence Day, Monday, August6, 1962, is being replicated 50 years later in 2012 as Jamaicans worldwide celebrate the golden anniversary of independence. In Toronto, a group of Jamaicans the Jamaica 50 Celebration Inc. Committee has planned a series of festivals and events in the areas of visual, literary, performance and culinary arts, to celebrate the islands vibrant cultural heritage. The year-long program, under the banner, Jump for Jamaica, will highlight the positive contributions Canadians of Jamaican heritage have made to Canada their adopted home. Jamaica 50 Celebration is an exciting calendar of events and installations showcasing Jamaican ingenuity from the arts to academia to athletics. Jamaica 50 Celebration boasts the best of the best, Jamaican-born personalities, second-and third-generation Jamaicans, as well as friends of Jamaica, renowned experts and artistes from Canadian communities and around the world. We invite all Canadians and the world to experience our Jamaica 50 Celebration events and to partner with us tocelebrate in the warm, vibrant, one-love spirit that is Jamaica.

The Jamaica 50 Celebration Inc. is a not-for-profit organization that has established a Steering Committee for Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area to plan an exciting and wide-ranging program of events and activities. The Committees goal is to show case the outstanding contributions of Jamaicans In Canada; to foster tourism to Jamaica; to encourage youth of Jamaican heritage to be better informed and to support Jamaica; and to provide a legacy to Jamaica and Canada through charitable and other social and cultural initiatives. The Toronto Committee will also collaborate with various community organizations in celebrating the 50th anniversary. The organization provides financial assistance to a wide range of charitable causes and will have a special focus on initiatives for Jamaica in 2012.

Playing on the OLDEST Golf course in the Western Hemisphere, Manchester Golf Club, now identified as a World Heritage site, brought visions of men in knickerbockers with wooden head drivers enjoying this beautiful nine-hole double tee golf course, located in the centre of the town of Mandeville. The talent of Jamaican artists is often described as unprecedented and unequalled. The country boasts a significant number of gifted individuals who have brought honour and pride to all Jamaicans. The Art + Literature Committee will showcase the work of Jamaican artists and feature authors of Jamaican heritage.

On May 28, 2012, Jamaica 50 will present An Evening with Malcolm Gladwell at the Bluma Appel Salon, in the Toronto Reference Library, as part of the Canadian celebration of Jamaica's 50 years of Independence. As a showcase of Jamaican cultural heritage and to make this affordable to all, there will be no admission charge to attend. Best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell was born in Fareham, Hampshire, England. His father, Graham Gladwell, is a civil engineering professor emeritus at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. His mother, Joyce (nee Nation) is Jamaican-born, and a psychotherapist. Malcom has said that his mother, who published a book titled, Brown Face, Big Master in 1969, is his role model as a writer. Gladwell has been a staff writer with The New Yorker magazine since 1996, and in 2005 he was namedone of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People. He is the author of four books including The Tipping Point: How Little Things Make a Big Difference, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking and Outliers: The Story of Success, all of which were number one New York Times bestsellers. His fourth book, What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures is a compilation of stories published in The New Yorker.

Fifty Years of Contemporary Art in Jamaica The National Gallery of Jamaica was established in 1974, as the first national art gallery in the Anglo phone Caribbean, and has a comprehensive collection of early, modern and contemporary art from Jamaica, along with some Caribbean and international holdings. This summer, the Art Gallery of Mississauga will host an exhibition of master works from the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Jamaica. Circa 1962/ Circa 2012, Fifty Years of Contemporary Art in Jamaica will open on July 12, 2012. It has been 27 years since the last major art exhibition from the National Gallery of Jamaica took place in Toronto. The National Gallery of Jamaica and the Art Gallery of Mississauga will partner to present this eight-week exhibition that will feature works by Barrington Watson, Edna Manley, Mallica "Kapo" Reynolds, Eugene Hyde, Karl Parboosingh, Milton Harley, Osmond Watson, Ebony G Patterson, Marlon James, Petrona Morrison and Leasho Johnson. This exhibition will explore changing ideas about contemporary art in Jamaica from the period of Independence in1962 to the present day. As part of the Canadian celebration of Jamaica's 50 years of Independence, as a showcase of Jamaican cultural heritage and to make this event affordable to all, there will be no admission charge to see this exhibition.

How does a country of less than three million people have such an impact on the world musically, culturally and creatively? JAMAICAN RHYTHMS, a three-hour rocumentary, will feature Jamaicas performance arts in its finest forms and will answer that question. Location:Sony Centre for the Performing Arts Tickets:Available at Ticket Master. $40 - $160 JAMAICAN RHYTHMS will walk through the five decades of reggae music with icons from each decade. FAB 5, Jamaicas hottest live band, will present the rhythms of the 60s; JOHN HOLT will strut through the 70s; Reggae Queen MARCIA GRIFFITHS (member of Bob Marleys I Threes) will rock the 80s; Grammy nominee KING YELLOWMAN, will chant the rhythms of the 90s; silky smooth Grammy nominee MAXI PRIEST will have Sony Centre swooning through 2000; and BEENIE MAN, Grammy winner and King of the Dancehall, will jump into this decade. The decades of JAMAICAN RHYTHMS will be connected with dances and talk of the decades. Lyrics and verses have told the history of our nation, cultural nuances that bring laughter to our ears and rhythms that have soared to the top of the charts internationally. The acclaimed movement of Jamaicas National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC) and Usain Bolts dancing Gully Creepa to celebrate his Olympic & World records ricocheted across the globe, generating a vibe that engaged Jamaicans and the millions of friends of Jamaica. JAMAICAN RHYTHMS will play tribute to Reggae icon Bob Marley, whose international reach has touched people on every corner of the planet. Among the top catalogue musicians in Canada today, he sits snugly between Elvis and the Beatles. Bobs One Love, the song of the last century, is an anthem of peace and love which flows from the lips of millions of people. Our Folk Music has been well-preserved and remains engaging and current. 4WD Youth Initiative

There are many youth involved in the Jamaica 50 Celebration supporting and leading the development of this successful year. The 4WD Committee events are run by young people, our leaders of tomorrow. The events focus on our future success and the contributions that will be made to our communities and each other. Our mission is to empower each other by harnessing our potential and showcasing our talent through various events and activities in 2012. 4WD Vlog Series This guerrilla-style video series follows the 4WD team as we explore why young people are excited to celebrate Jamaicas golden anniversary in 2012. Its A Roots Sinting Writing Competition March 15 to April 15, 2012 A competition which invites young Canadians in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) to celebrate the Jamaican influences in their lives. Contestants will submit a short story, prose, poem or song lyrics to a maximum of 500 words that speaks to how Jamaica, its culture and/ or people, has positively impacted them. The contest is open to residents of the GTA between the ages of 12 and 25. Rooted in the mosaic of our home, the competition is not limited to those of Jamaican background butis open to all young people. Six winners will be selected by a panel of esteemed authors and young people.

Corporate Information The Jamaica 50 Celebration Inc. is a not-for-profit organization that has established a Steering Committee for Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area to plan an exciting and wide-ranging program of events and activities. The Committees goal is to showcase the outstanding contributions of Jamaicans in Canada; to encourage youth of Jamaican heritage to be better informed and to support Jamaica; and to provide a legacy to Jamaica and Canada through charitable and other social and cultural initiatives. The Toronto Committee will also collaborate with various community organizations in celebrating the 50th anniversary.
