Safety Assignment
This document should be returned online through canvas in the first week of the
semester. Students who fail to return SAFETY ASSIGNMENT will cause 5 points
deduction in each assignment.
1. According to the dress code, what should you wear in the laboratory?
Lab coat, goggles when needed. I should also wear closed toed shoes of
nonporous material and long hair should also be tied back. When wearing the
lab coat no visible skin should also be shown.
2. What type of goggles should you wear and when should you wear them?
Safety glasses( goggles) during experiments. Especially when handling
dangerous materials.
3. In what cases might you be asked to leave the laboratory?
If the rules are not followed.
4. Can you eat in the laboratory? Explain your answer.
No. No food or beverages are allowed in the lab. Food or beverages may
contaminate materials and may also be dangerous to consume in a lab
setting.
5. What should you do if:
A) you broke a beaker and cut your finger.
notify my TA immediately so they can clean and dispose of the beaker safely.
I should also flush my finger with cold running water and my TA will provide
me with an antibiotic ointment and bandaid.
B) chemicals have splashed on your face.
Notify my TA immediately, do not remove goggles and go to the eyewash station to wash
my face for a couple of minutes and then remove goggles and continue to wash face with
eyes open for another 10 minutes.
C) the fire alarm sounds.
Evacuate the lab quickly in a orderly manner, unplug any cables in case of an
electrical fire and press the big red button next to the prep room before
leaving.
D) your lab manual has caught on fire.
Notify my TA immediately and immediately smother the fire quickly. I can also
use water.
E) your shirt has caught on fire.
Stop, drop and roll. I can smother myself with a personal belonging or water as well.
F) chemicals have spilled on your pants.
remove contaminated Pants and wash the area with cold running water for 15 minutes.
