LABORATORY WORKSHEET 1:

UNITS OF MEASUREMENTS

INTRODUCTION
In physics, measurements are expressed in the International System of Units (SI) to ensure consistency
in scientific communication. Converting between units allows us to compare and analyze data
accurately. In this experiment, we will heat water using an alcohol lamp, measure its temperature in
Celsius, and convert it to Kelvin. We will also measure mass and volume, then convert them to other
SI units. This activity reinforces the importance of precise measurement and correct unit conversion in
experimental physics.

Objectives

1. To measure physical quantities (temperature, mass, and volume) using appropriate laboratory
equipment.

2. To apply unit conversion in expressing measurements in different SI units.

3. To demonstrate safe handling of heating apparatus (alcohol lamp).

Materials

o Alcohol lamp with fuel

o Tripod stand with wire gauze
o Beaker (250 mL)
o Laboratory thermometer (°C scale)
o Graduated cylinder (100 mL)
o Laboratory balance (grams)
o Stirring rod
o Water
o Matches or lighter
o Metric ruler (mm/cm)
o Measuring tape (m)
o Weighing scale (g/kg)
o Graduated cylinder (mL/L)
o Stopwatch (s)
o Thermometer (°C)
o Calculator
o Conversion table (provided)
o Extra bond paper for computations
Procedure

 Length Measurement

• Measure the length of the laboratory table in centimeters (cm) and convert it to meters (m) and
millimeters (mm).

 Mass Measurement

• Weigh an object in grams (g) and convert the value to kilograms (kg) and milligrams (mg).

 Volume Measurement

• Using a graduated cylinder, measure 250 mL of water and convert it to liters (L) and cubic
meters (m³).

 Time Measurement
• Time how long it takes for a marble to roll down a ramp (in seconds) and convert it to minutes.

 Temperature Measurement

1. Wear safety goggles and gloves. Place the tripod stand on a stable surface.

2. Fill the beaker with 100 mL of water using the graduated cylinder. Record the volume in liters.

3. Measure the mass of the beaker with water using the laboratory balance. Record the mass in
grams, then convert to kilograms.

4. Place the beaker on the wire gauze above the alcohol lamp.

5. Measure the initial temperature of the water in °C. Record the value, then convert to Kelvin.

6. Light the alcohol lamp and heat the water until the temperature increases after 5 Minutes.
Repeat after 15 minutes.

7. Record the final temperature in °C, then convert to Kelvin.

8. Extinguish the alcohol lamp safely.

9. Clean and return all equipment.

 Pressure Reference

• Write the standard atmospheric pressure in pascals (Pa) and convert it to kilopascals (kPa).

 Record all measurements and conversions in the provided Data Table.

Guide Questions

1. Why do scientists use the SI system instead of local units?

2. What safety precautions should you follow when using an alcohol lamp?

3. If the water's temperature increased from 28°C to 48°C, what is the temperature change in
Kelvin?

4. How do measurement errors affect your conversions?

5. Explain why accurate unit conversion is essential in physics experiments.
