Model Essay

Topic : Should our city ban single-use plastic bags?

Length : 230 words

1) Issue (Introduction)
Many people argue about whether our city should ban single-use plastic bags. These bags
are cheap and convenient, but they also create serious waste and pollution. This essay
will discuss arguments for and against a ban before giving a conclusion.

2) Arguments For
Firstly, a ban could reduce plastic waste that goes to the landfill. Supermarkets give out
thousands of bags every day, and many become litter in rivers and streets. Secondly,
fewer plastic bags would mean fewer emissions from producing and transporting them. In
addition, a ban would encourage people to reuse stronger, long-lasting bags, which helps
conserve resources.

3) Arguments Against
On the other hand, some people say a ban is not practical. Small shops may not afford
paper or cloth bags, which could raise prices for customers. Also, plastic bags can be
reused for trash at home; without them, families might buy other plastic products, so the
total pollution may not fall. Finally, a strict rule might be unpopular if there are not enough
cheap alternatives.

4) Conclusion
In conclusion, banning single-use plastic bags has clear environmental benefits, especially
for reducing pollution and waste. However, the city should support small businesses with
discounts for reusable bags and provide education on recycling. With these steps, a ban
is reasonable and could lower our city’s carbon footprint.
