change. How to recognize, set up, and solve different types
of percentage problems.
“Percent of”

1) 16 is what percent of 64?

16 is what percent of 64?
% = part/total
Given the part and total and asked to solve for the
Percent of.
Total is next to “of” and Part is next to “is”
First do the division which gives the answer in
decimal form.
16/64 = %
16/64 = .25
Then convert from decimal to percent by moving
the decimal point 2 places to the right or in Excel,
click the % style tool at the top.
16 is 25% of 64
A Word about Rounding
Percents
When solving for a percent, express
any answer greater than 10% rounded
to the nearest percent (whole
number).
Any answer less than 10% should be
rounded to the nearest tenth of a
percent (one decimal place). In Excel,
click the Increase Decimal tool in the

2) What is 25% of 64?

What is 25% of 64?
Given the percent and the total and asked to solve
for part.
Same formula, written different way: % * total =
part
Convert the percent to a decimal by moving
the decimal point 2 places to the left before
doing the calculation.

.25*64 = part
16 is 25% of 64
“Percent of”

3) 16 is 25% of what number?

16 is 25% of what number?

Given the percent and the part and asked to

solve for total.
% * total = part
Set up equation with variable for unknown total
.25*T=16
Divide both sides by .25
T=16/.25
16/.25=64
16 is 25% of 64

A Word about wording
answers.
What is the percent change in the population from 2001 to 2021?
Correct, but not informative answer: The percent change is 17%

Better answer: The population of the US increased by about 17%

from 2001 to 2021.

Why is this version better? 1) specifies what changed 2)

indicates whether it was an increase or decrease. “change”
is vague and 3) gives the time period for the change.

b. What was the percent change in the income tax
rate?
A few years ago, Illinois increased the state income tax rate from 3% of a
resident’s taxable income to 5%
a. What is the absolute change in the percent? Use correct units!
Absolute change = new – old
5-3 = 2
The Illinois tax rate increased 2 percentage points.
Correct units for an absolute change in percentages
is “percentage points”

b. What was the percent change in the income tax rate?

b. 448 is what percent larger than 400?

Compare 400 and 448.
a. 448 is how much larger than 400?
“how much larger” = Absolute difference = larger #
- smaller #
448-400=48
448 is 48 more than 400.
b. 448 is what percent larger than 400?
Percent larger than = (larger # - smaller #) /
reference quantity
The reference quantity is the one after “than” in
the problem.
(448-400)/400=.12
448 is 12% larger than 400.

b. What is the relative difference in their scores? In other words,
Jane’s score is what percent higher than Joe’s score?
Jane earned a 95 on her last math test. Joe earned a 78 on the same test.
a. What is the absolute difference in Jane’s score and Joe’s score? In other
words, Jane’s score is how much higher than Joe’s score?
Absolute difference = larger # - smaller #
95-78 = 17
Jane’s score is 17 points higher than Joe’s score.
b. What is the relative difference in their scores? In other words, Jane’s
score is what percent higher than Joe’s score?
Percent higher than= (larger # - smaller #) /
reference quantity
The reference quantity is the one after “than” in the
problem.
(95-78) / 78 = 22%
Jane's score is 22% higher than Joe's score.

b. The size of Texas is what percent smaller than the size of Alaska?
Alaska is the largest state in the country. Its area is 655,384 square miles. Texas is the
second largest state at 268,596 square miles.
a. The size of Alaska is what percent larger than the size of Texas?
Percent larger than= (larger # - smaller #) / reference quantity
(655384 – 268596)/268596 = 144%
Alaska is 144% larger than Texas.

b. The size of Texas is what percent smaller than the size of Alaska?
Same formula for a Percent Smaller Than.
Percent Smaller Than = (larger # - smaller #) / reference
quantity
(655384 – 268596)/ 655384 = 59%
Texas is 59% smaller than Alaska.
For a Percent More Than the reference quantity will be the smaller
number and for Percent Less Than it will be the larger number.
