[3] According to Forbes.com, as of March 2011, Mallya, is worth US $1.4 billion. [4] He is ranked 879 in The ForbesWorld Billionaires Ranking (2011), and 38th in India. He receives substantial press coverage that focuses on hislavish parties, villas, automobiles,Force India,Royal Challengers Bangaloreand his yacht, the Indian Empress Personal life Mallya was born into a Konkani Goud Saraswat Brahminfamily which originally from the town of Bantwal, near Mangalore, inKarnataka.He is the son of Vittal Mallyaand Lalitha Ramaiah. He later set up business ventures in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Mallya's first wife was Sameera and they have a sontogether, namedSidhartha Mallya. Sidhartha was educated at Wellington College in Crowthorne followed by QueenMary's College in the University of London. Later on, Mallya married Rekha with whom he has two daughters:Leiana and Tanya Mallya. Rekha has a daughter from a previous marriage: Laila. [ citation needed ] Vijay Mallya is renowned for his lavish spending. His social gatherings have been attended by prominent politiciansas well as other businessmen and have been much spoken of in the media. The flamboyant businessman owns 26homes around the world and is called the Richard Branson of India. Other expensive assets include a stud farmcomprising over 250 race horses,200 classic vintage cars, a castle in the United Kingdom and severalyachts and private jets. Mallya owns a sprawling home onBangalore's Vittal Mallya Road (named after his father); there is also a Vijay Mallya Road in Bangalore.

[edit] Business [edit] Breweries Mallya took over as Chairman of United Breweries Groupin 1984 from his father Vittal Mallya. Since then, thegroup has grown into a multi-national conglomerate of over sixty companies, with an annual turnover whichincreased by 63.9% over 15 years to US$11.2 billion in 19981999 . The focal business areas of the groupencompass alcoholic beverages,life sciences, engineering, agriculture,chemicals, information technology, aviationandleisure. [ citation needed ] In May 2007, United Breweries Groupannounced the all-cash acquisition of scotch whiskymaker Whyte & Mackayfor 595 million (approximately Rs 3000 crore).

Kingfisher Airlinesobtained a 26% stake inAir Deccan, a low cost Indian airline which Mallya later acquired fully and rebranded asKingfishers Red. Vijay Mallya and hisJet Airwayscounterpart Naresh Goyalannounced an alliance after amarathon meeting on 13 October 2008 atMumbai, India. Kingfisher Airlines is also the first Indian airlineto order the Airbus A380.

[edit] Cricket Vijay Mallya is the owner of Royal Challengers IPL team through his flagship firm UB Group. Mallya wanted toassociate one of his top-selling liquor brands, either McDowell's No. 1 or Royal Challenge with the team.[8] Thelatter was chosen, hence the name. The jersey

colours of the team are red and golden yellow, the same as theKarnataka state flag,[9] and the logo consists of the RC emblem with "Royal Challengers Bangalore" in standardformat. His party contested almost all of the 224 seatsduring the KarnatakaState legislative election. Mallya owns yachts, private jets, a customized Boeing 727,around 250vintage cars and a stud farm with 200 horses. Sports lover Vijay Mallya is the owner of the BANGLORE ROYAL CHALLENGERS Team of IPL. Mallya paid Rs 464.3 cr for the team. The team was lead by Rahul Dravidfor the first season and by Anil Kumble for the second season.The team has players like Zaheer Khan, Praveen Kumar, Mark Boucher andmany more big names. Mallya and Dutch Businessman Michiel Mol are theowners of a Formula One Team, FORCE INDIA. Force India was earlier calledspyker.They bought the team for 88 million Euros. Great Acquirer UNITED BREWERIES is the second largest spirit group in the world.
