Challenge 3

Parking Lot

Goal
Put into practice the different logic, electronics and design skills of each team
member to simulate a parking lot that shows at the entrance the number of
available spaces and signals with green or red LEDs if the spaces are occupied or
empty.

Material
● 1 Micro:bit ● 2 IR
● 1 Shield ● Servomotor
● 1 LCD ● 5 LEDs (2 red, 2 green, 1 blue)

Roles
Architect: the physical prototype and the connections.
Agent: makes a sales proposal to implement smart parking on campus.
Programmer: the code and flowchart.
Designer: 3D and documentation.

Description
When we have to go to shopping centres, it’s much easier to turn around to see
if there are green lights so we can park. Unfortunately, not all places have this
technology, so you will make a proposal to those who are in charge of the
campus, so our parking lot has it. This proposal must consider the following:
● A prototype showing how the system would be installed in 2 parking
spaces and a third for people with disabilities.
● A sales proposal that includes how much it would cost Tec to install the
system on 1 floor of the covered parking lot, considering the number of
drawers, the cost of each sensor, LED, shield, labour, etc.
● Code and connections that show the following operation:
o Servo: Access boom will be open if there are places, otherwise it
will stay closed.
o LEDs: if the LED is red it is because the place is occupied, if it is
green it is because it is free and the blue LED.
o IR Sensor: it will detect if there is a parked car or not.
o LCD: will show the status (empty or occupied) of the two parking
spaces.

Prototype
You must make the parking lot model in Tinkercad Designs and physically,
integrating the electronic components in it: 2 IR, 5 LEDs, 1 servo and the LCD
screen.

The design must include three parking spaces, one of them for people with
disabilities. Consider elements such as the roof, signs, stops, signs, etc.

Sales proposal
Do some research on the prices of the components, go to the parking lot and
count how many drawers there are on a floor to make the correct calculation,
and think about how much it would cost and how much they would charge if
they have to install the system.

Evaluation Points

Prototypes 30

The prototype includes the electronic components: 2 IR, 5 LEDs, 1

/5
servo and the LCD screen.

The electronic components are perfectly integrated into the

prototype, as the prototype has dedicated spaces for the
/5
components to be placed, which means, the connections are
hidden.

The design includes 3 parking spaces, one of them for people with
disabilities, consider elements such as the roof, signs, stops, and /10
signs.

The physical prototype is creative, original, clean, and of good

/10
quality and it’s not improvised.

Sales Proposal 20

Completes the information in the table with everything requested. /20

Code 5
The variables were used correctly (data types, nomenclature and
syntax) and made appropriate use of control structures and /2
operators.

The code includes a comment with the team data. /3

Functionality 30

The IR sensors detects the presence of a vehicle. /12

In a drawer, there is an LED that turns green if the drawer is

/4
available and red if it is not available.

In another drawer, there is another LED that turns green if the

/4
drawer is available and red if it is not available.

There is a blue LED that stays on in the handicapped drawer. /1

The servo opens and closes depending on whether or not there

/6
are spots.

The LCD shows the status of 2 parking spaces. /6

Diagrama de flujo 10
It includes the flowchart by hand according to the guidelines seen
/5
before and the geometrical figures are well done.

Correctly identify all inputs in blue. /2

Correctly identify all processes in yellow. /1
