Throwing and catching are important skills in cricket and many other games. They are skills a child will use when fielding
The aim of the lesson is to develop and improve the two skills of throwing and catching
Catching:
There are three main elements to catching successfully:
Getting into position to catch the ball/object - move to get in line with it
Watch the ball/object - keep the eyes on the ball/object and watch it all the way to the hands
Hands ready - having the hands out in front of the body ready to catch the ball/object
Throwing:
Teacher Notes The children should focus on developing and improving their overarm throwing technique
The children should be introduced to the concepts of:
Aiming - throwing the ball in the correct direction
Accuracy - throwing the ball as close as possible to the intended target
Power - teach the children how to increase the distance they can throw the ball by increasing the power they can put into a throw
The importance of these aspects in making a good quality throw should be emphasised to the children
Also discuss with the children when it is best to use different types of throws:
Underarm Throw - for short distances where accuracy is important
Overarm Throw - for longer distances where more power is going to be required to get the ball to the intended target
