Lesson Plan

Class:

Standard Three (3)

Number in class:

six

Teacher:

Mrs Cian Ramsundar

Subject:

Physical Education

Topic:

Throwing and catching

Date:

Objectives:
Demonstrate the skill of an underarm throw and a catch
using bean bags and soft balls.

Set Induction/Warm up:

Students enter the court yard and are asked to find their personal space.
The teacher then explains the warm up activity. The warm up activity is a
grouping game called sticky popcorn. Students warm up using the skill of
jumping and grouping.
The students role play sticky popcorn in a pot by jumping around the
general space. When the teacher says, Sticky popcorn group of 2 students
jump and pair up. When she says Sticky popcorn group of three students
jump around to make groups of three and continues like this.

Learning Activity:
Students form two lines, where they align themselves with a partner. They
select their partner and their partner is now their teammate. Each team is
given a bean bag. The teacher demonstrates how to throw an object using
an underarm pass:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Both legs on the ground

Hold object with one palm up, below the chest
Look at your target
Throw in a upward motion to a partner

The teacher then demonstrates the position the students take when they are
catching:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Focus on the object and the direction which it is coming from

Position your hands at wait height.
Reach out as object is approaching
Grip object when you come into contact with it

Assessment:
Activity 1:
Students form two circles. Each circle has three children. Each group is
assigned a number which they would be counting in. For example, group 1
would be counting in 2s. As they throw the bean bag they must call the
number which comes after the number which was called. Example 2, 4, 6, 8,
10. If the students make an error with counting, throwing or catching the
game is restarted. Group 2 would do the same but use a ball and count in
3s.
Activity 2:
All students form a circle. In this circle, students are given numbers 1 to 6
and the rules of the game are defined;
For this game we are going to be using one bean bag and one ball to
demonstrate a throw and a catch in the circle. Students labelled 1, 3 and 5
would be counting in 4s and throwing to only these members using the bean
bag. Students 2, 4 and 6 would be counting in 5s using the ball and can
only pass to the students labelled 2,4 and 6. Then the team labelled 1, 3
and 5 would count in fours and the team labelled 2, 4 and 6 would count in
5s and the resource would be exchanged when they have completed up to
the number assigned. Therefore in one circle we are really playing as two
teams. The team which reaches the 12x part of their tables first wins.
Teammates must demonstrate an underarm pass, not a chest pass or high
pass. If the latter two are demonstrated the team will restart.
