Salsa vs Tango
Quick tip: If a couple seems to be gliding across the floor in an intimate and sensual clinch, it's tango; salsa is more of spinning and gravity-defying hip movements. People to impress: Culture vultures, dance show fans, the new intern Salsa: It's saucy, sassy and red hot-quite like the salsa of the edible variety. If any dance had to showcase the fun side of Latinos, this would be it. From start to end, salsa is a breathless burst of energy. It is more informal of the two styles and is set to up-tempo music. Unlike tango, the dance form doesn't follow any rigid guideline or pattern. As long as you swing your hips-a la Shakira-you are doing salsa. It's friendlier of the two styles. It's said that in salsa, if you are not socialising, you aren't dancing either. The dance requires mainly the touching of hands while you spin your partner around; the more intimate embraces are left to tango. It's not necessarily a couple dance and is simpler to learn. Four lessons and anyone can bluff their way as a salsa dancer. While the dress code for salsa is informal-lesser the clothes, the better-heels are a must. Though some people may suggest helmets and arm and knee braces, as one wrong turn or prep could result in a pulled muscle, or a broken arm. A word of caution: douse yourself with deodorant prior to your session, as salsa may be sexy but it's sweaty too. Tango: When Al Pacino's character Lt Col Frank Slade danced the tango in Scent of a Woman, even the couch potatoes reached for the yellow pages to check for dance lessons. And then Arnold Schwarznegger broke the spell by dancing the form in True Lies. But tango had arrived. It's more ceremonious, subdued, structured and reverent form of the two. Tango is danced in a sombre tone, often defined as 'a sad thought danced'. It's not about sex-unlike what Hollywood portrays-so much as yearning and desire. Danced to a slow melancholy strain, it really does take two to tango. On the floor, you are only as good as your lead will allow, because of the constant close embrace. It's more regimented than salsa, you just can't follow the rhythm, you have to learn the steps. The tango is known to be a very intimate and sensual because you're holding your partner close as you glide across the floor. Tango usually works better if there's chemistry between the couple; otherwise the dance can fall flat.
