indicating the number of weapons in the battery (troop). These units
will be further dealt with under "Artillery" (see B, sec. II, par. 7, p.
75, below). 4. COMPOSITE UNITS. Should a company consist of
several component units, as do headquarters companies and heavy
(weapons) companies, then the tactical symbols representing the
component units are placed within the basic company symbol. For
simplification, however, the letters St (Stab) or S (Schwer) may be
substituted. Examples: p4 OR Mil OR Stabskompanie (mot) eines

symbol O indicates an increase in the caliber of howitzers and heavy
high-angle howitzers. Examples: 150-mm howitzer 210-mm heavy
high-angle 305-mm heavy high-angle _i howitzer howitzer n
Variations in types of artillery pieces as well as increases in caliber
are indicated by an additional A to the head or the tail of the arrow.
1 The German terms leichtes Maschinengewehr and schweres
Maschinengewehr, generally known as "light machine gun" (British
"LMG") and "heavy machine gun" (British "MMG"), are referred to
throughout in the U. S. column as "machine gun (bipod)" and
"machine gun (tripod)."
Section VII. Abbreviations Used with Basic and Tactical
Symbols The letters F, Gr, Ls, Sich, St, Sir, T, and Wa, indicating
special employment (see the list of abbreviations below), are placed

Comprehensive lists of German abbreviations will be found
in the U. S. "German Military Abbreviations," Special Series, No. 12
(12 April 1943), and in the British Vocabulary of German Military
Terms and Abbreviations {Revised to 1942) (April 1943). German
words in the list below are given in the nominative singular. Although
many of them are actually used in their combining form (e. g.,
Betriebs-, Festungs-, etc.), it has been thought desirable to cite only
the basic form of these words. German Abbreviation Meaning U. S.

Section VIII. Supplementary Numerals Supplementary
numerals denoting the number of headquarters, staffs, and units are
placed on the right of the tactical symbols. The following
organizations and their headquarters are indicated by Arabic
numerals: armies, divisions, regiments, separate (independent)
battalions, companies (and equivalent units). Example: Current Old
German U. S. British fan Grenadierregiment 18 18th Infantry
Regiment HQ 18 Gren Regt M8 Roman numerals are used to indicate
corps, battalions (within regiments), platoons, and their
headquarters. Examples: to Generalkommando VIII. A. K. Hq VIII

Section IX. Revised System of Military Symbols As stated in
the introduction, the system of German military symbols has
changed radically during 1943. The new system as it applies to
weapons and equipment is analyzed in this section. 1 ® 1. CALIBER
OF WEAPONS. Caliber is shown by placing numerals representing
centimeters to the left of the basic symbol. Example: Current Old
German U. S. British 10,5 cm I.F.H. 105-mm light field howitzer.
10.5-cm gun-how Another method of showing the caliber is to place
the following letters to the left of the symbol: le (leicht), light; m
(mittel), medium; s (schwer), heavy; and sw (schwerste),
superheavy. Examples: J, ||| 10,5 cm l.F.H. 105-mm light field
howitzer _ 10.5-cm gun-how o 12 cm Granatwerfer 120-mm mortar
'_' . 12-cm mortar 1 For the revised basic symbols for weapons and
equipment, see sec. Ill, p. 7, above.
Short- and long-barreled guns of the same caliber are
differentiated by the letters k (kurz), short, and I (lang), long,
respectively, on the right of the numerals showing caliber or number
of guns. Examples: 2 Granatwerfer, langem Rohr Kaliber 8 cm mit
Two 81-mm mortars with- long barrels Two 8-cm mortars with long
barrels ltj/EZ+3/Ek mittlere Panzerkompanie zu 10 Pz. IV 1. Rohr

shortbarrelled guns The following chart shows the classifications
used in indicating the caliber of weapons: 1 German classification
Antitank rifles Infantry howitzers (guns) Mortars Antitank guns

howitzers ("Morser") Antiaircraft guns Light (leicht, or I, or Ze)_
Medium (mittel, or m) _ Heavy (schwer, or s)__ Superheavy
(schwerste, or sw) Up to 7.9 mm Up to 75 mm Up to 79 mm 80 to
119 mm 120 mm and larger Up to 39 mm 40 to 59 mm 60 to 89 mm
90 mm and larger Up to 109 mm 110 to 159 mm 160 to 219 mm
220 mm and larger Up to 99 mm Up to 129 mm Up to 36 mm 37 to
59 mm 60 to 159 mm 160 mm and larger 8 mm and larger 76 mm
and larger 100 to 209 mm 210 mm and larger 130 to 209 mm 210
mm and larger 210 to 249 mm 250 mm and larger 1 The German
practice is to designate in centimeters weapons with calibers of 20
mm and larger.
2. RANGE OF WEAPONS. Range is shown by numerals
representing kilometers above, the basic symbol. 3. ORIGIN OF
WEAPONS. The country of origin of a weapon is indicated by placing
supplementary letters to the right of the basic symbol: for example,
b for belgisch (Belgian), / for franzosisch (French), etc. (These and
other abbreviations used in this connection are shown in the list of
abbreviations given in sec. VII, p. 20, above.) 4. NUMBER OF
WEAPONS. The number of weapons is indicated by numerals placed
below the symbol. Example: Current Old German U. S. British 3
schwere Maschinengewehre 3 machine guns (tripod) 1 3 MMGs
Where within a unit there are weapons of the same type but of
different caliber, one basic symbol may be used to indicate all the
weapons, the numbers of each type being given below it,
commencing with the largest caliber on the left. Examples: 1 2 s.
und 6 le. Infanteriegeschiitze 2 heavy and 6 light infantry howitzers
2 hy and 6 It inf guns 2+6 2*6 Z- 3*o*e ^ 8' unc* ® Granatwerfer
3 heavy and 6 light light mortars 3 hy and 6 It mortars 3 + 0*6 5.
BARRAGE BATTERIES (TROOPS). Barrage batteries (troops)
(Sperrfeuer-Batterien) are indicated by placing the letters Sp to the
left of the symbol below the caliber. 1See sec. VI, p. 17, note 1,
above.
6. HOME DEFENSE ANTIAIRCRAFT GUNS. Home defense
antiaircraft guns (Heimat-Flak) are indicated by the letters Hei on the
right of the basic symbol. 7. EMERGENCY ANTIAIRCRAFT GUNS.
Emergency antiaircraft guns (Alarm-Flak) are indicated by the letters
Al placed to the right of the basic symbol. 8. NUMBER OF VEHICLES.
The number of vehicles is indicated by placing numerals below the
basic vehicle symbol. 9. TYPES OF TANKS. Types of tanks are
indicated by Roman numerals within the basic tank symbol.
Example: VeTX K7l Panzerkampfwagen IV Tank, M4 _ _ Pz Kw IV
The abbreviations le, m, and s must not be used with the basic tank
symbol to indicate particular types of tanks. These abbreviations
may be used, however, to indicate tank units. Example: \\e \ -
11. BRANCH OF THE ARMED FORCES. There are two
methods of indicating the branch of the Armed Forces to which a
certain weapon belongs. The first method is to place the letters H for
Heer (Army), L for Luftwajje (Air Force), and M for (Kriegs)marine
(Navy), in parentheses (brackets) next to the unit number on the
right of the symbol. In the second method the branch is shown by
presenting the unit number in colors: black for Army, green for Air
Force, and blue for Navy. 12. GUN POSITIONS. The supplementary
symbols employed to indicate guns in position are given below:
Symbols: In position In fixed position In fixed position under armor
or concrete Under construction Completed (above weapon symbol)
(below weapon symbol) (below weapon symbol) Examples: Antitank
gun in position T Gun in fixed position Howitzer in fixed position
under armor or concrete
13. EXAMPLES. The three examples that follow illustrate the
combination of basic weapon and supplementary symbols. In these
examples the new system of symbols is used exclusively. New 2/109
