contractions
Contractions are a very common way in which fluent English speakers, when they speak or write, are able to reduce two words into one. These new words are written like this: I am = Im I am a doctor. = Im a doctor. How to form contractions To form contractions, you have to replace letters with an apostrophe (). For example, the contraction of I + have replaces the first two letters of have (ha) with an apostrophe (I have = Ive). Contractions using not One of the most common structures of contractions is formed with the word not and either a to be verb, a modal verb (can, should, would, etc.) or an auxiliary verb. To form contractions using the word not, replace the o with an apostrophe (). I do not see it. = I dont see it. She is not here. = She isnt here. We can not (cannot) go. = We cant go.

your turn
Draw a line from each contraction to its meaning. 1. Im 2. Ive 3. shes 4. weve 5. theyre 6. its 7. were 8. hes 9. theyve 10. youve 11. youre a. it is b. you have c. I have d. you are e. they are f. I am g. she is/she has h. they have i. we are j. we have k. he is/he has

To Have
