1. This exam has six problems on six separate sheets. Check your paper and write your name at the top of each sheet now. 2. Each question must be answered on its own sheet. If you need more space, use the back of the same sheet. Show all of your work. 3. Sometimes one part of a problem requires using an answer from a previous part that you were unable to complete. In that case, either use a symbol for that answer and solve in terms of that symbol or assume a specific number and solve the problem using that number. 4. You must indicate your reasoning and show your work on all problems!

1. (35 points) Block A on an inclined plane is connected by a massless string passing over a massless and frictionless pulley to a second block B. Initially block A is moving up the plane and block B is moving downward, both with speeds of 3 m/s. They come to rest after traveling a distance of 1.5 m.

a. (10 points) Find the constant acceleration of the blocks as they come to rest. b. (10 points) Using mA = 5 kg and mB = 2 kg, find the tension in the string as the blocks come to rest. c. (15 points) Using the work-energy theorem, find the coefficient of kinetic friction 4 between block A and the inclined plane .

2. (35 points) A block with mass m = 2 kg is attached on a frictionless surface to a horizontal spring with spring constant k. For this spring a force of 10 N causes a displacement of 0.05 m. The block is released from rest with an initial displacement from equilibrium of x = 0.2 m. k M

a. (5 Points) Find the spring constant k. b. (8 points) Find the maximum and minimum speeds attained by the oscillating block. c. (6 points) Find the maximum acceleration of the block. d. (7 points) Find the speed of the block when x = A/2 where A is the amplitude of the block's motion. e. (9 points) Find the total energy E, the potential energy U and the kinetic energy K of this system of block and spring when x = A/2.

3. Parts A and B of this problems are not related to each other. , A. 1671 cm3 of steam condense to form 1 cm3 (1 gram) of liquid water at a constant pressure of 1 atm (1.013 x 105 Pa). The heat of vaporization at this pressure is Lv = 2256xl03 J/kg. i. (8 points) Find the work done by the steam as it condenses. ii. (7 points) Find the change in internal energy of the steam. B. When 20 J of heat are added to a metal bar its length increases from 1.00000 m to 1.00002 m and its temperature increases from 20.0 C to 20.5 C. i. (7 points) Find the coefficient of thermal expansion of the metal bar. ii. (8 points) If the mass of the metal bar is m = 0.05 kg, find its specific heat c.

4. (35 points) A cannon on the top of a hill fires an exploding shell of mass 20 kg with a speed of 400 m/sec at an angle of 36.9 degrees above the horizontal. The top of the hill is 240 meters above a level plain. y N0 = 400 m/sec = 36.9 240 m hill plain

a) What are the horizontal and vertical components of i) displacement and ii) velocity of the shell at its highest point? b) At the highest point, the shell explodes into two pieces of equal mass. Immediately after the explosion, one piece is at reat. What is the velocity (magnitude and direction) of the second piece? c) When the second piece comes down in the plain, what is its horizontal distance from the cannon on the top of the hill? d) What is the velocity (magnitude and direction) of the second piece just before it hits the plain?

5. (35 points) A circus stunt is performed with a uniform ladder of mass 200 kg and length 10 meters which is supported at an angle of 53.1 degree with respect to the horizontal by a frictionless hinge at the lower end and a vertical cable at the upped end. A man of mass 70 kg starts at the bottom and climbs the ladder. (Note the moment-of-inertial information on the cover sheet.) a) Draw all the forces on the system of the ladder plus the man. b) When the man has climbed 8 meters along the ladder, what is the tension in the cable? c) What is the total force (magnitude and direction) of the bottom hinge on the ladder? d) What is the moment of inertia of the ladder plus the man about the bottom hinge? e) If the cable suddenly breaks, what is the initial angular acceleration of the system of the ladder plus the man about the hinge? f) The ladder continues to fall. Use energy calculations to find the angular velocity of the system of the ladder and the man just before hitting the ground. .
