DAILY ROUTINE. HOUSEHOLD CHORES
LESSON 1
3.Find and highlight daily routine expressions with articles. How many did you find?
What other expressions about daily routine with a/an/zero do you know?
Every weekday, I get out of bed at 7 a.m. and take a quick shower. Then I brush my teeth
and get dressed. I usually have a sandwich and a cup of tea for breakfast. After that, I
catch the bus and go to school. I have lunch in the school canteen at 12:30. After school,
I do the washing and help my mum set the table for dinner. In the evening, I like to have
a short break and watch TV. I go to bed at 10 p.m.

6.Read the text and match each person with the chore from the list. One chore is
extra.
The Johnsons
The Johnson family lives in a cozy house in the suburbs. There are five members in the
family: Dad, Mom, two kids, and Grandma. Each person has their own household chores,
and they all work together to keep their home happy and organized.
Dad, named David, is an engineer who works hard during the week. He often comes home
late, but he always makes time for his family. At weekends, he likes taking care of the
garden. David believes that a beautiful garden makes their home more welcoming. He is
responsible for taking out the rubbish. He also loves to spend time playing soccer with
his kids in the backyard.
Mum, named Sarah, is a teacher. She is very organized. Every evening, Sarah cooks
delicious meals for the family, trying out new recipes that everyone enjoys. She also
likes to set the table nicely for dinner, with candles or flowers. After dinner, she often
helps her children with their homework.
Emily, the eldest daughter, is 14 years old. She is a responsible teenager who helps
around the house. Emily is in charge of cleaning her room and vacuuming the carpets. She
also enjoys baking with her Grandma on weekends, and they often make cookies or cakes
together. Emily always loads the dishwasher after cooking.
Jake, the younger brother, is 10 years old and full of energy. He has a part-time job
walking the neighbor's dog after school. Jake is also responsible for doing the laundry
twice a week. He understands the importance of keeping their home clean and often
reminds his family to recycle plastic.
Grandma, named Margaret, lives with the Johnson family and is the heart of their home.
She loves to share stories from her past and often teaches her grandchildren life
lessons. Grandma takes care of the living room, dusting the furniture and washing the
floors. She also loves to cook traditional family recipes.
Together, they make a warm and loving place to live. They enjoy spending time together,
whether it's playing games, watching movies, or going for family walks.

14.Read the teenagers' opinions about household chores. Agree or disagree with
them and explain why.

wash the floors once a week too!

nice for me. I just want to hang out with my friends and enjoy my free time. I really like
walking with my dog. I also look after him when my parents are away.
6.I think everyone should help around the house. It’s nice to have a clean flat, and when
we all work together as a family, it feels like we’re a team. I’m in charge of sweeping the
floors, loading the washing machine every day, and picking up my brother’s toys from the
floor. He always makes a mess. It’s not difficult at all!

B.Have you ever noticed how Sunday evenings feel stressful? I spend most of Sunday
trying to enjoy myself, but there’s always a voice in my head reminding me of everything
waiting for me on Monday — tests, alarms, deadlines. It’s like Monday arrives early.
C.On Saturdays, I don’t set an alarm. I wake up when my body tells me to, usually much
later than during the week. It’s the only day I can truly relax in the morning, drink
coffee slowly, and read a book before I even think about getting dressed. It feels like
my brain finally has time to recharge.
D.Last Sunday, I had to finish a school project while the sun was shining outside. It felt
unfair to be stuck indoors, working on spreadsheets while my friends were at the park.
Balancing fun and responsibility is one of the hardest parts of growing up.
E.My friend has a weekend job at a pet shelter, and although it’s work, she always comes
back smiling. She says it doesn’t feel like a job at all. I think it’s interesting how some
people spend their weekends working but still enjoy them more than their weekdays.
F.My weekdays are so packed that I sometimes forget what day it is. Between school,
homework, and after-school activities, it feels like I’m just running in circles. That’s
why I love Friday evenings — they feel like the finish line of a long race.
G.It’s 3 p.m. on a Thursday, and the classroom is quiet except for the ticking of the
clock. The sun outside draws long shadows across the desks, and everyone’s minds seem
to be somewhere else. This is the moment in the week when I often feel the most tired
— not because of the work, but because the weekend still feels far away. My brain
starts drifting toward plans: maybe a movie night, a late breakfast, or sleeping in. But
for now, I have to stay present, keep writing, keep solving, even though the sunlight
makes me dream of freedom. These “shadows” in the afternoon aren’t just the ones on
the floor — they’re the thoughts of rest that pull me away from my routine.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for your email! I was happy to get it.
Well, now I’d like to answer your questions. I’m really into playing basketball and
drawing. These activities are a great way to relax and be creative. I started playing
basketball four years ago. As for drawing, I picked it up when I was younger, maybe
about 8. I’d love to improve my skills and maybe share my art online someday. Basketball
is just for fun and staying active.
By the way, tell me more about your last hike. Did you take any pictures while hiking?
How long did your hike last? Did you face any challenges on your way?
Hope to hear from you soon!
Best wishes,
Kate
