1. An essential prerogative of state sovereignty, the Judiciary has a fundamental role, namely ensuring that laws are complied with and that the rights of each individual are protected. While remaining firmly rooted in its founding principles such as equality, impartiality and independence, the Judiciary has shown itself capable of adapting to changes in society. The Judiciary is now closer to the people, it handles proceedings more efficiently and is more open to modern society. Throughout history, the French Judiciary has always changed in line with society. Originally, judgments were handed down by the King, or by those acting under his authority, and were thought to reflect the will of God. It is now administered by the state and rendered in the name of the French People.
