Travel Agency: Hi, this is Oxalis Adventure. How may I help you? Match the words with the right pictures.
Tourist: Hi, my name is Steve Clarke. I'm calling to ask for some
information about adventure sports in Vietnam.
Travel Agent: Good morning, Mr. Clarke. May I ask whether you have
ever booked any tours from our company?
Tourist: Not yet. This is my first time. I've looked through the activities
that you offer on your official website.
Travel Agent: Are you particularly interested in any of them, Mr. Clarke?
Tourist: Well, I was not an outdoor person in my 20s, but now I have
acquired quite a taste for caving, exploring those, you know, mysterious
and intriguing caves that few people have chances to set foot in.
Travel Agent: If so, I would recommend the Son Doong Cave, the world's
largest natural cave. In order to participate in this tour, you need to be
well prepared and extremely fit. Strict health examinations and skills

THE FIRST CONDITIONAL

We use this to talk about possible situations and the results of those situations.

If + present tense, future tense

future tense if + present tense

For example: If I put the money in the bank, it will be safer.

= It will be safer if I put the money in the bank.
If I take the university bus, I can save a lot of money.
= I can save a lot of money if I take the university bus.

Notes:
• When the if part comes second, there is no comma.
• We can use might, could, may instead of will to talk about something is less certain to happen.
For example: I might save the money for my future plan if I share a flat with other students.
• Unless means ‘if not’.
For example: Unless I study hard, I won't pass the exam.
= If I don't study hard, I won't pass the exam.

66

6
THE SECOND CONDITIONAL

We use the second conditional for imaginary situations in the present.

if + past simple, would + infinitive

would + infinitive if + past simple

Ex: If I had time, I would take more exercise.

= I would take more exercise if I had time.

Notes:
We can use 'were' instead of 'was' with 'I' and 'he/she/it'
Ex: If I were you, I would listen to the doctor's advice.

FM1: I’m going skydiving!
FM2: You're kidding!
FM1: No, I'm not. I'm really going skydiving.
FM2: Wow, I didn't know that you are an adrenaline junkie.
FM1: It’s going to be exhilarating. I think it’s time to live my life. I’ve been dreaming of
skydiving since I was a little kid. I’m at a time in my life where I think I need to take risks, and
go for the thrill, and get outside my comfort zone. You know, that kind of thing.
FM2: I’m all for taking risks, but that just seems very dangerous to me. I mean, you could die!
FM1: I prefer to concentrate on the thrill more than the “falling to my death” part.
FM2: OK, well that’s probably wise. But really? Skydiving? It just seems so risky.
FM1: But what’s more dangerous? Possible, actual danger, or the regrets you will face later
having not done it?
FM2: I don’t think I will ever regret not jumping out of an airplane. I have things that I want to

Part 4:
(M) When you go extreme snowboarding and head for the highest peaks and the steepest
slopes, you should take a little more than a map and some basic survival equipment with you.
Unlike what you often find at ski resorts, you won’t see any signs telling you where rocks or
trees are around. When it comes to snowboarding, it’s up to you and your guide to make sure
your route is as safe as possible. Of course, you should never attempt to go down a slope on
your own. It’s essential to be accompanied by a guide who must go first every time as there
may be no clear route down through the rocks and other dangers.
They’ll also show you the way up to your starting point which may involve a long difficult climb
and wearing a large backpack containing supplies. I know some snowboarders like to take a
helicopter up to the top and that’s quick and easy though expensive. But I always prefer to go
on foot with a helmet on. It's a nice warm up for the upcoming descent.
