Task 1: Poster Comparing Two Psychological Approaches
Unit Title: Psychological Perspectives
Student Name: [Insert your name]

Assessment Criteria: AC 1.1, 2.1
Description of Assignment
This assignment explores how psychologists use different theoretical approaches to
explain human behaviour and mental processes. The task required creating an A3 poster
comparing Cognitive Psychology with another psychological approach, focusing on their
key ideas, similarities, differences, strengths, limitations, and practical applications.
Poster Title: Comparison of Cognitive Psychology and Behaviourism
Overview:
Cognitive Psychology focuses on internal mental processes such as thinking, memory,
perception, and problem-solving. It views the mind as an active information processor and
has been developed by key theorists such as Jean Piaget, Ulric Neisser, and Aaron Beck.
This approach has strong links to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which is used to
treat mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression.
Behaviourism, developed by John B. Watson, Ivan Pavlov, and B. F. Skinner, focuses on
observable behaviour and the ways it is learned through conditioning. Behaviourists
believe that behaviour is shaped by the environment, using experiments to study
cause-and-effect relationships.
Similarities
• Both rely on scientific, experimental methods.
• Both aim to explain learning and predict behaviour.
• Both have real-life applications in therapy and education.
Differences
Cognitive Psychology focuses on internal mental processes while Behaviourism focuses
on observable behaviour. Cognitive Psychology views humans as active information
processors, whereas Behaviourism sees them as passive responders to environmental
stimuli.
Strengths and Limitations
Cognitive Psychology explains complex mental functions and supports CBT but can be too
theoretical and ignore emotions. Behaviourism is highly scientific and practical but ignores
internal mental processes and can be overly simplistic.
Applications
Behaviourism is used in education, behavioural therapy, and advertising. Cognitive
Psychology is applied in mental health (CBT), learning, and workplace training.
Summary:
Behaviourism explains how people learn through the environment, while Cognitive
Psychology explains how thought influences learning and behaviour. Together, they
provide a broader understanding of human behaviour.
