INFORMAL WRITING

FORMAT OF A FRIENDLY LETTER Friendly letters can be divided into the following sections GREETING Be sure that you know the ways of starting a letter to different people To a friend: Dear+ first name To a brother/sister: Dear+ first name Example: Dear Omar To your mother /father: Dear Mum/ Dear Dad To your parents: Dear Mum and Dad To a cousin: Dear + first name To an aunt: Dear Aunt + first name To an uncle: Dear Uncle + first name In any case, use only the standard Dear. Do not be tempted to write Dearest My Dearest My Best Friend FIRST PARAGRAPH: INTRODUCTION There are several set, or fixed, ways of writing an introduction. 1. Using an apology a) Apologising when there is a genuine reason why the writer has not written I m sorry I havent written for ages, but Ive been busy studying and havent had the time Im sorry I havent written for ages/so long/a long time Im sorry I havent written since your birthday/the party/we last met

The reason for not writing can change. ......Ive been busy moving. .......Ive busy settling into my new house. .......Ive been busy rehearsing for the school play. .....Ive been busy getting fit at the gym. .....Ive been busy revising for my exam b) Apologising when there is no real excuse for not writing Ive been meaning to write to you for ages, but Im afraid I just havent got round to it.

Ive been meaning to write since the party, but things kept cropping up and Im afraid I just havent got round to it/Im afraid I just havent had the time.

2 .Other introductions to friendly letters do not involve an apology. It was lovely to get your letter yesterday. It was great to hear from you last week.

3 .An introduction to an informal letter can also begin with something very personal, to show your friendship. Congratulations on passing the exam! I hope you re feeling better. I hope youve got over the flu.

SECOND PARAGRAPH: TRANSITION AND BODY There are three different ways to begin the transition: 1. Using the words Anyway, OR Anyhow, Example: Dear Sarah, Im sorry I havent written for ages but Ive been busy rehearsing my part for the school play.
