SAFETY INFORMATION
Advisory Labels
Cautionary signal words (Danger-Warning-Caution) may appear in various locations throughout this
manual. Information accented by one of these signal words must be observed to minimize the risk of
personal injury to service personnel, or the possibility of improper service methods which may damage
the vehicle or cause it to be unsafe. Additional Notes and Service Hints are used to emphasize areas of
procedural importance and provide suggestions for ease of repair. The following definitions indicate the
use of these advisory labels as they appear throughout the manual:

Activities associated with Danger indicate that death or serious personal

injury may result from failing to heed the advisory. Serious personal injury
may be equated to career-ending injury.

Activities associated with Warning indicate that personal injury may result
from failing to heed the advisory. In this case, personal injury is not equated to
career-ending injury, but results in possible change in quality of life.

Activities associated with Caution indicate that product damage may result from
failing to heed the advisory. Caution is not used for personal injury.

A procedure, practice, or condition that is essential to emphasize.

A helpful suggestion that will make it quicker and/or easier to perform a procedure,
while possibly reducing service cost.

INTRODUCTION
Service Procedures and Tool Usage
Anyone using a service procedure or tool not recommended in this manual must first satisfy himself
thoroughly that neither his safety nor vehicle safety will be jeopardized by the service method he selects.
Individuals deviating in any manner from the instructions provided assume all risks of consequential
personal injury or damage to equipment involved.

Also note that particular service procedures may require the use of a special tool(s) designed for a
specific purpose. These special tools must be used in the manner described, whenever specified in the
instructions.

1. Before starting a vehicle, always be seated in the driver’s seat, place the
transmission in neutral, be sure that parking brakes are set, and
disengage the clutch.
2. Before working on a vehicle, place the transmission in neutral, set the
parking brakes, and block the wheels.
3. Before towing the vehicle, place the transmission in neutral and lift the
rear wheels off the ground, or disconnect the driveline to avoid damage to
the transmission during towing.

Engine-driven components such as Power Take-Off (PTO) units, fans and fan
belts, driveshafts and other related rotating assemblies, can be very
dangerous. Do not work on or service engine-driven components unless the
engine is shut down. Always keep body parts and loose clothing out of range
of these powerful components to prevent serious personal injury. Be aware of
PTO engagement or nonengagement status. Always disengage the PTO when
not in use.

REMEMBER,
SAFETY . . .IS NO ACCIDENT!

INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
Mack Trucks introduces the engine model line-up
for 2001. Included in this line-up are the new
E-Tech™ CCRS (Current-Controlled Rate
Shaping) engines. The unit pumps used on
CCRS engines utilize technology where electrical
current supplied by the Engine Electronic Control
Unit (EECU) controls the rate of fuel injection.
This technology allows the shape of the fuel
injection curve to be tailored, and also provides
improvements to exhaust emissions, driveability
and fuel economy.

With horsepower ratings ranging from 275 to 460,

the 2001 engine model line-up represents the
largest engine selection and the best power-to-
weight ratio available in the industry. Included are
the Maxicruise® engines with horsepower ratings
of 310/330, 330/350, 355/380 and 380/410.
These engines are designed to cruise at
1,500 rpm where peak power is developed,
thereby ensuring optimum gradeability and fuel
efficiency. At non-cruising speeds, the lower
power level and fueling rates further contribute to
the overall fuel economy of the engine.
Production introduction dates for E-Tech™ CCRS
engines are as follows:
r Maxicruise E7-310/330, E7-330/350,
E7-355/380, and all engines 350
horsepower and lower — March 2001
r E7-400 — June 2001
r E7-427, E7-460P and E7-460E — October
2001
r E7-380/410 — November 2001

For service and overhaul information on the

E-Tech™ engine models, refer to the E-Tech™
Engine Service Manual, 5-106. Specific
maintenance, service interval and lubricant
specification information is included in the
Maintenance and Lubrication manual, TS494.

servicing an engine, it must first be determined
which version (CCRS or pre-CCRS) is being
serviced.

The E-Tech™ CCRS engine uses “leakless”

nozzle assemblies, eliminating the need for the
fuel return line. The easiest method of identifying
a CCRS engine is by looking for the fuel return
line at the back of the rear cylinder head, or for
the cross-over line between the two cylinder
heads. If the engine does not have a fuel return
line or a cross-over line, then it is a CCRS engine.
If there is a fuel return line and a cross-over tube,
then it is a pre-CCRS engine.

The Federal Family number located on the

engine version. The last two digits of the Federal

Barometric and Boost Pressure
Sensors
On E-Tech™ E7-460 CCRS engines, beginning
with V-MAC® III step 8 software, a barometric
pressure sensor and a boost pressure sensor
were incorporated into the system.

BAROMETRIC PRESSURE SENSOR

The barometric pressure sensor is located in the
Engine Electronic Control Unit (EECU). The
barometric pressure sensor continuously
monitors the ambient barometric pressure and
transmits the information to the EECU. The
EECU uses the information supplied by both the
boost pressure sensor and the barometric
pressure sensor for fault activation and
diagnostics regarding over-boost or under-boost
conditions. Refer to “WASTEGATE
TURBOCHARGER TROUBLESHOOTING” on
page 26.

BOOST PRESSURE SENSOR

The boost pressure sensor is located in the inlet
manifold. The boost pressure sensor
continuously monitors inlet manifold pressure and
transmits this information to the EECU. The
EECU uses the information supplied by both the
boost pressure sensor and the barometric
pressure sensor for fault activation and
diagnostics regarding over-boost or under-boost
conditions. Refer to “WASTEGATE
TURBOCHARGER TROUBLESHOOTING” on

Boost pressure specifications given in the table

above are the mean boost pressure values
measured at sea level under ideal test conditions,
with a tolerance of ± 4 psi. When boost pressure
is measured, measurements must be taken with
the engine at full load-rated speed and normal
operating temperature. The engine must be
stabilized at this speed for at least one minute
before the measurement is taken. At altitudes
above sea level or extreme ambient
temperatures, boost pressure results may differ
from the specifications listed above.

Boost pressure specifications given in the table

above are the mean boost pressure values
measured at sea level under ideal test conditions,
with a tolerance of ± 4 psi. When boost pressure
is measured, measurements must be taken with
the engine at full load-rated speed and normal
operating temperature. The engine must be
stabilized at this speed for at least one minute
before the measurement is taken. At altitudes
above sea level or extreme ambient
temperatures, boost pressure results may differ
from the specifications listed above.
