Bellaire Tournament
BELLAIRE The Red Devils
rolled past Bear Lake in the
opener and then defeated the
host Eagles in the final to cap-
ture the Bellaire Softball Invita-
tional on May 19.
In game one, winning pitcher,
Lissa Vincent tossed a two-hitter
against Bear Lake, fanning three
and walking one in the process
in the Red Devils 15-0 three in-
ning mercy victory. Bellaire
reached the final with
Emily Crick had two hits, in-
cluding a triple while Kara La-
Vanway added another triple to
lead East Jordan at the plate.
Maddie Cesaro, Lindsey Gra-
ham, Val Peters, McKenna
Steltzner and Vincent all added
one hit apiece.
Despite the sweltering heat,
our girls played great, East Jor-
dan coach Meg Kitson said. It
was great to win this invita-
tional.
In the title game, Tommie Out-
man allowed six hits, struck out
four and walked six in earning
the win for the Red Devils.
At the plate, Peters pounded
out two hits and a pair of RBI,
while Crick, Graham, and Allie
Sutton all singled. Graham also
added two RBI.
East Jordan 7-8,
Joburg 8-4
JOHANESBURG The Red
Devils couldnt quite put the Car-
dinals away in the opener, but
managed to do that in game two,
in coming away with a non-con-
ference softball split on May 21.
In game one, it took extra in-
nings to decide the winner, eight
to be exact, as the two teams bat-
tled to a 4-4 tie at the end of six
innings (regulation). With each
team adding a pair of runs in the
seventh, the Red Devils added an-
other in the top of the eighth to
go up 7-6, before Joburg pushed
two runs across in the bottom
half of the inning to claim a
hard fought 8-7 win.
Valerie Peter took the loss in
relief of starter Lissa Vincent.
Peters allowed three hits, while
walking one.
Peters paced the EJ offense
with three hits, while Lindsey
Graham singled twice and Vin-
cent, Emily Crick and Allie Sut-
ton all added hits. Crick, Graham
and Vincent all picked up RBIs.
Abby Schlicher gave up eight
hits, fanned six and walked six in
the Joburg victory.
Exciting game, we were ahead
and had our opportunities to win
but mistakes cost us a victory in
game one, EJ coach Meg Kitson
said. It was nice to get game two
for a split.
In the nightcap, sophomore
Tommie Outman went the dis-
tance for East Jordan, allowing
seven hits, striking out four and
walking two.
Maddie Searo had two hits, in-
cluding a double and two RBI to
lead East Jordan, while Crick
added two hits.
Also for the Red Devils, Kara
LaVanway and Peters both sin-
gled. Peters single gave her a 23
game hitting streak.
East Jordan stands at 17-13
overall with the split.

East Jordan 4-8,
Joburg 7-9
JOHANESBURG The
Red Devils and Cardinals
went back and forth in
both contests before
Joburg was able to finally
put East Jordan away in a
non conference baseball
matchup on May 21.
In the opener, EJ scored
in the first and second in-
nings and added a pair in
the fifth, but were unable
to hold off the Cardinals as
they scored in the opening
inning, added two in the
third and another four in
the bottom of the fifth for
the 7-4 win.
Jordan Harasewicz took
the loss, going five innings,
allowing seven runs (five
earned) on seven hits,
while fanning seven and
walking two.
Zak Shepard singled
twice to lead the Red Devils
at the plate. Skylar Gibson,
Austen Mellios, Aaron
Peck, Matt Bolser, Tim
Shutt and Harasewicz all
singled.
Peck finished with two
RBI, while Gibson, Mellios
and Bolser added one RBI
each.
This was a back and
forth game between two
good teams, they were very
aggressive on the bases
and took it to us, Red
Devil coach Al Stallard
said. I felt when we took
the lead in the fifth that we
were in good shape, but
JoBurg came back and
scored three runs after we
had two outs in their half
of the fifth. You have to
give them credit.
Game two saw the Cardi-
nals put up four runs in
the bottom of the first and
had to hold on as the Red
Devils came roaring back
in the fifth by scoring six
times. JoBurg added solo
runs in the bottom half of
the fifth and sixth for the
victory.
Bolser took the loss in re-
lief of starter Mellios.
Bolser worked 4 2/3 in-
nings, allowing four runs
(three earned) on four hits,
four walks and fanned six.
Harasewicz doubled with
an RBI to lead EJ, while
Bolser and Dustin Hejka
singled.
We had a good come-
back in this one, although
it was aided by several er-
rors, it was good to see us
keep fighting back, Stal-
lard noted. We just could-
nt hold on at the end.
East Jordan 2-9,
Mancelona 3-2
MANCELONA The Red
Devils took on one of the
top programs in the Ski
Valley Conference and
came away with a split by
winning game two of the
doubleheader on May 17.
Zak Shepard took the
loss in the opener, going
five innings, allowing three
runs on nine hits and strik-
ing out two.
Austen Mellios and John
Richards doubled to lead
the Red Devils at the plate.
Mellios picked up two RBI
on the hit.
In the nightcap, East Jor-
dan scored six times in the
top of the fourth to come
away with a 9-2 victory.
Matt Bolser earned the
win, going six innings, al-
lowing two runs (one
earned) on three hits, two
walks and striking out
seven.
Aaron Peck finished
with three hits and two
RBI to lead the Red Devils
at the plate. Skyler Gibson
and Bolser had two hits,
Jordan Harasewicz dou-
bled and Jacob Graham,
Shepard and Tim Schutt
all singled.
The bats finally came to
life in game two after being
shut down for the last cou-
ple of games, EJ coach All
Stallard said. Matt Bolser
pitched very well for us
again.
Mancelona has an ex-
cellent program and I have
a lot of respect for Coach
Jim VanWagoner, any win
we get against them is
hard earned. The coach
noted.

Grayling 11-2,
Boyne City 3-4
GRAYLING It took a
little longer than one
would hope, but it came at
a good time for the Ram-
blers as Cody Elzinga
earned his first win of the
season and in turn his first
varsity win in game two of
a Lake Michigan Confer-
ence doubleheader on May
15.
Elzinga allowed five hits,
while fanning four and
walking three in the vic-
tory.
The Rambler offense
was led by Waylon Hen-
ning with three hits, while
Zeek Beek and Chandler
Roberts both singled.
Boyne City improved to
6-18-1 overall, 3-11 confer-
ence, scored a pair in the
top of the third and added
single runs over the next
two innings.
In game one, the hard
throwing Elliott Hausler
scattered five hits over
three innings of work, fan-
ning one and walking two.
Austin Gardner struck out
three in relief.
Elzinga led the offense
with two hits and Gardner
added a single.

Charlevoix 14-10,
Burton Bentley 0-0
BURTON The
Charlevoix Rayder hurlers
combined to strike out 19 in
a shutout sweep in a non-
conference match-up with
Burton Bentley on May 19.
Ace Coby Herriman
fanned 10 in game one,
while Andrew Potter sent
nine back to the dugout in
the nightcap. Herriman
only allowed one hit and
Potter three against their
opponents.
Noach Certa and Tommy
Zipp led the offense with
two hits each, both collect-
ing doubles, while Shane
Sutherland and Luke
Klinger each added a pair
of singles.
With the 10 Ks, Herri-
mans strikeout total for the
season stands at 103 in 48
innings of work and his ca-
reer total increased to 310.
Herriman set the school
record last spring for career
and adds to it with each
strikeout.
In game two, the Rayders,
13-14 overall, Isaac Klooster
finished with three hits,
Certa two, and KeNen
Borths added a single.
Charlevoix 2-4,
harbor Springs 1-6
HARBOR SPRINGS In
another Lake Michigan
Conference contest featur-
ing pitching aces,
Charlevoixs Coby Herri-
man and Harbor Springs
Scott Morse did battle on
the mound and at the plate
and neither athlete disap-
pointed, as the Rayders
managed a 2-1 game one
victory on May 15. Harbor
rebounded in the nightcap
thanks to a two-run home
run by Nate VanSloten to
give the Rams the differ-
ence.
In game one, Herriman
fanned 13 and walked three
while holding the Rams to
two hits. Morse was just as
effective, allowing four hits,
striking out five and walk-
ing one.
Both pitching aces also
showed their power at the
plate by delivering solo
home runs.
The Rayders were able to
push across the would be
game winner in the top of
the third when Noah Certa
scored on a Harbor error.
Certa reached base earlier
in the inning on a base hit.
Andrew Potter singled
twice to lead the Rayders,
while Morse had the hit for
the Rams in the form of a
single.
In the nightcap, Andrew
Potter took the loss, strik-
ing out six and walking
three.
The big blow of the game
came on a VanSloten two-
run homer in the bottom of
the fifth. Charlevoix would
threaten in the top of the
sixth, but stranded runners
at the corners.
Nate Moon and Tommy
Zipp hit home runs to lead
Charlevoix, while Potter
finished added three hits,
Isaac Klooster, Certa and
Will Telgenhof all finished
with one hit each.
With the split, Charlevoix
is 10-11 overall, 8-6 confer-
ence.

was nearly killed in
Afghanistan when the truck in which he was riding hit an Im- provised Explosive Device and blew up.
Platoon Sgt. Troy Drebenst- edt said he was thrown into the side of the vehicle, hitting his head and suering other in-

walkers are advised to grab
a disposable bag, as well.
An ordinance was intro-
duced at the city commis-

tion 6-36 addresses re-
moval of dog feces if a dog

new ordinance adds the
language that states:
Anyone walking their dog
on property other than
their own shall be required
to have a disposable bag

that no sale shall be made to

when there are sufficient personal
reasons for burial within the
township; that all sales of ceme-
tery lots are non-transferable (but
may be sold back to the township)
and are on a form approved by
the township board (which grants
only a right of burial and which
records the name and address of
the person for whom the burial
site is being purchase); that
changes to the person assigned
to a burial site requires a sale
back to the township and a repur-
chase of the cemetery lot at the
then current sale price (except
that the township clerk may
change or add names on a ceme-
tery lot sold prior to 2001 without
a sale and repurchase); that the
township board has the authority
to place a limit on the number of

hours notice for a grave opening
(with exception made by the sex-
ton or township clerk); requiring a

fore the burial site is opened
(under the direction of the sexton);
requiring at least twenty-four (24)
hours prior notice when the gave
opening is done pursuant to a
court order or under the supervi-
sion and direction of local or state
health department authorities (not
under the direction of the sexton);
and granting the sexton discretion
to determine whether Winter buri-
als may occur (with additional
fees).
Section 5. Markers or MemoriaIs.
This section specifies the regula-
tions for markers or memorials
within the cemetery, including that
they be comprised of stone or
other equally durable composition;
that there be only one monument
or marker per burial site (except
with sexton permission); that they
be on a suitable foundation with a
wash base of not less than three
(3) inches around; that they be
placed at the west end of the bur-
ial site with inscriptions facing
east or be across the face of flush
type markers; that native boulders
with an engraved plaque set on a
foundation may be burial markers
(no more than 3 feet high by 3
feet wide by 2 feet deep); that
sexton permission be obtained
prior to setting any monument and
marker; that they be installed
within 2 years; that the mainte-
nance of all monuments and
markers is the responsibility of the
heirs of the person buried; that the
township board has the right (at
the expense of the owner of the
cemetery lot) to remove or repair
any monument and marker found
to be in violation of the regula-
tions; and that burials without
markers for 20 years or more shall
be designated by the sexton with
white crosses.
Section 6. Interment ReguIa-
tions; VauIts.

regulations, including the require-
ment that only one person shall
be buried in a burial site (with ex-
ceptions for infant cremains); the
requirement that proper documen-
tation be provided concerning the
person to be buried; that cement
boxes or vaults be used (with ex-
ceptions on religious grounds);
that cremains be buried in a con-
tainer approved by the township
and not dispersed within the
cemetery; that only human re-
mains be buried in burial sites;
and that all graves be located in
an orderly and neat-appearing
manner within the confines of the
burial site.
Section 7. Ground Mainte-
nance.
This section specifies the regula-
tions for ground maintenance, in-
cluding that the township is
responsible for maintaining the
cemetery and can remove any
item placed in the cemetery in vio-
lation of the regulations or can re-
move any tree, plant, or shrub
located within the cemetery in the
interest of maintaining proper ap-
pearance and use of the ceme-
tery; that no earth work is allowed
upon a burial site without the per-
mission of the sexton or the town-

foot of the head stone; that all pri-
vately owned motor vehicles re-
main on designated roadways
within the cemetery; and that the
township clerk post the cemetery
rules and contact information in
the display box at the entrance to
the cemetery.
Section 8. Forfeiture of Vacant
Cemetery Lots or BuriaI Sites.
This section specifies the proce-
dures for forfeiting vacant ceme-
tery lots or burial sites that have
been vacant for more than 40
years, including prior notice to the
last owner of record; and with no
response to the notice, the forfei-
ture of the cemetery lots or burial
sites to the township, which will
result in those cemetery lots or
burial sites being eligible for re-
sale.
Section 9. Repurchase of
Cemetery Lots or BuriaI Sites.
This section specifies that the
township will repurchase any
cemetery lot or burial site (that
has not been forfeited) from the
owner for the original price paid to
the township.
Section 10. Cemetery Records.
This section requires the township
clerk to maintain records related
to the cemetery and to make an

Question & Answers About
Selling Real Estate
Part 2 of 3 series
How to prepare for a seam-
less transition
If youre moving this sum-
mer, the busiest season for
moving, you know how daunt-
ing it can be. But if you create
a blueprint for your move, the
transition from house to
house will go more smoothly.
Here are the steps 4 7 of 10
things you can do to prepare
for a seamless transition.
4. Moving is NOT childs
play. Plan ahead. Consider
daycare on moving day, or get
help from a friend or family
member. Provide lunch or
some other appropriate thank
you gesture if you do call in a
favor. If thats not an option,
prioritize setting up safe
places for your children to
play in the new home on mov-
ing day so theyre not under-
foot. This will help everyone
remain happy and calm on
moving day.
5. Dont fight with Fido.
Sometimes we forget that all
the packing and constant in-
and-out of visitors is stressful
for animals. Consider check-
ing your pet into a daycare fa-
cility, or setting up a time for
a friend to take them or check
them into petday care. Dont
let your four-legged best
friends get lost in the shuffle
and remember to make day-of
moving arrangements.
6. Keep track of small parts.
Some items need to be broken
down into pieces when mov-
ing, but do you know what to
do with the small screws and
washers that you end up
with? Rather than tape them
to the furniture, which can re-
sult in losing them, put every-
thing in a baggie that is
clearly marked and sealed.
Keep all of the separate bag-
gies together in one box on
moving day and personally
take it with you to your new
home.
7. Take pictures of elec-
tronic hook-ups. Hooking up
TVs, DVRs, home theater sys-
tems and computers can be
challenging. Before unplug-
ging any wires for the move,
take a photo of the connec-
tions, print them out and label
them in detail. This will cre-
ate fewer headaches when set-
ting up technology in the new
home. Keep track of all loose
wires using baggies or boxes
that are clearly labeled, and
personally carry these easy-
to-lose items on moving day.
