Advocacy Assignment 1: Closing 1. Purpose of the Exercise.

To demonstrate the skills, art and advocacy of an effective closing argument in the your assigned case 2. Assignment. Your entire case is presented with the closing argument in mind. The closing argument assignment is, therefore, a great way to evaluate how well youve analyzed the case and the issues in it. In accordance with the case analysis you did in Taylor, assume that all admissible evidence has been admitted and used at trial. Furthermore, assume that each side presented its case in accordance with the theory and theme identified for each side in case analysis. If you have an even assignment number, you are the prosecutor. If you have an odd assignment number, you represent the defendant. Prepare a 8-10 minute closing argument. 3. Evaluation Criteria. a. b. Uses a concise and compelling moral theme. Theory of the case is evident and clear. Advocate explains how evidence and law proves theory of the case.

c. Uses descriptive language and avoids passive voice. d. Effectively integrates facts, inferences and evidence with the law and standards and burdens of proof. Uses case file jury instructions to explain the law. e. Clearly and logically organized. f. Appropriate and natural gestures, body language and eye contact. g. Effective prayer for relief. h. Starts and ends strong. i. Use of note is not distracting.
