Unit 6: Redox Reactions

Worksheet 4

1. How much charge passes through a wire carrying 2.5 A of current for 16 minutes?

2. How many moles of electrons pass through a wire that is carrying 1.74 A of
current for 28.6 minutes?

3. The following questions refer to the below diagram of a voltaic cell.

AgNO3 Pb(NO3)2

a) Write the balanced net ionic equation for the favored redox reaction that occurs
in the voltaic cell above.
b) Calculate the standard cell potential, Eo, in volts for the favored reaction that
occurs in this cell.
c) What concentrations of Ag+ and Pb2+ are necessary for the cell to produce
the standard cell potential calculated in part b? (this does not require any calculations)
d) In which direction are the electrons flowing?
e) What will happen to the mass of the Ag electrode as the reaction progresses? What will
happen to the mass of the Pb electrode?
f) The salt bridge contains LiNO3 (aq). Describe the motion of ions through the salt bridge as
the reaction progresses.

4. A voltaic cell is constructed with Cr (s)/Cr3+ at one half cell, and Cu (s)/Cu2+ at the
other. Both half cells are at standard conditions.

a) Write the half reaction that takes place at the anode.

b) At which electrode (Cr or Cu) does the reduction occur?
c) Write the balanced net ionic equation for the favored redox reaction
that occurs in the voltaic cell.
d) Calculate the standard cell potential, Eo, in volts for the favored
reaction that occurs in this cell.
5. You are given the following materials:

1.0 M solutions of CuSO4, ZnSO4, and Au(NO3)3

Strips of the following metals: Cu, Zn, Au
A NaNO3 salt bridge, wires, and a voltmeter

Using whatever you need from the list, draw a diagram of a voltaic cell with the largest
possible value for Eocell and use it to answer the following questions.

a) Write the balanced net ionic equation for the process occurring in the cell
b) Calculate Eocell for the cell
c) Which metal is the anode, and which is the cathode?
d) What would the voltage of this cell be if it were constructed without the salt bridge? Explain.

6. The following favored reaction takes place in an acidified voltaic cell. (note: both half-
reactions are on your SRP sheet)
O2(g) + 2 H2S(g) → 2 S(s) + 2 H2O(l)

a) What is the half reaction that takes place at the anode?

b) What is the half reaction the takes place at the cathode?
c) Calculate the standard cell potential, Eocell
d) What must the partial pressures of the reactants be in order to produce the
voltage in part c?
e) What volume of oxygen gas is consumed by the reaction if 0.128 mol of
H2S is used? (Hint: Use the ideal gas law)
f) Find the total charge that passes though the cell when 0.128 moles of H2S
are consumed.
