Unit 6: Redox Reactions

Worksheet 6

1.

Water is being electrolyzed in the apparatus above in the presence of a non-reactive

electrolyte under standard conditions.
a) Write the balanced equation for the reduction half reaction.
b) Write the balanced equation for the oxidation half reaction.
c) Write the balanced net ionic equation for the total reaction.
d) Which electrode (left or right) is the cathode? Justify your answer.

2. A current is run through a molten solution of CaCl2 via inert electrodes, causing the reduction of
calcium ions and the oxidation of chloride ions.
a) Write out the balanced net ionic reaction which will occur.
b) Calculate Eocell and ∆G for this reaction
c) Would the mass of either electrode change? Justify your answer.

3. When a current is run through a solution if NiSO4, the nickel is reduced while oxygen is
produced due to the oxidation of water.
a) Write out the balanced net ionic reaction which will occur.
b) Calculate K for this reaction.

4. A battery is attached to a solution of manganese (II) iodide. The reduction which occurs is that
of water while the iodide is oxidized.
a) Write out the balanced net ionic reaction which will occur.
b) What is the required battery voltage for this reaction to proceed?

5. How much time would it take to plate out 1.03 g of solid nickel from a Ni2+
solution with a current of 2.75 amperes?

6. How much time would it take to plate out 1.25 g of solid copper from a Cu2+
solution with a current of 5.35 amperes?

7. What mass of solid silver will be produced when a current of 25.0 amperes flows
though a solution of aqueous silver, Ag+ (aq) , for 45.0 minutes?

8. If a current of 12.3 amperes flows through a solution of aqueous Ni2+ for 39.0
minutes, what mass of solid nickel will be produced?
