The heat transfer of a transistor can be increased by inserting it into
an aluminum base (k = 200 W/m⋅K) which has 12 longitudinal fins
fabricated entirely on their external surface. The radius of the transistor and the
height are r1 = 2 mm and H = 6 mm, respectively, while the fins are
of length L = r3 - r2 = 10 mm and uniform thickness t = 0.7 mm. The thickness of the
the base of the sleeve is r2 - r1 = 1 mm, and the contact resistance of the interface
base-transistor is R″t,c = 10-3 m2 ⋅K/W. Air at T∞ = 20°C flows over the
surface of the fin, which provides a convection coefficient
approximately uniform of h = 25 W/m2⋅K.
Exercise 3.106
A long circular aluminum rod is attached at one end to a wall.
heated
and transfers heat by convection to a cold fluid.
(a) If the diameter of the rod triples, how much would the speed change?
heat removal?
(b) If a copper rod of the same diameter is used instead of the aluminum one
How would the rate of heat removal change?
Exercise 3.107
A tin rod 100 mm long and 5 mm in diameter is extended
horizontally from a mold at 200°C. The rod is in ambient air with
T∞ =20°C yh= 30 W/m2·K. ¿Cuál es la temperatura de la varilla a 25, 50 y 100
mm of the mold?
Exercises 3.108
Two long copper rods with a diameter of D = 10 mm are welded together at the end.
with extreme; the welding has a melting point of 650°C. The rods are
in air at 25°C with a convection coefficient of 10 W/m2·K. What is the
minimum input power required to perform the welding?
Exercise 3.109
Circular copper rods with a diameter of D= 1 mm and a length of L= 25 mm are
usan
to reinforce the heat transfer of a surface maintained at Ts,
1 = 100°C. One end of the rod is attached to this surface (at x = 0), while
the other (x= 25 mm) is connected to a second surface maintained at Ts, 2 =
0°C. The air flowing between the surfaces (and over the rods) is also at
a temperature T∞ = 0°C, and a convection coefficient h = 100 is maintained
W/m2·K.
What is the heat transfer by convection of a single rod?
copper in the air?
What is the total heat transfer of a section of 1×1 m of the
surface at 100°C, if a rod arrangement is installed at centers of 4 mm?
Exercise 3.111
Consider two long thin rods of the same diameter, but of different
materials. One end of each rod is joined to a base surface that is
it is maintained at 100°C, while the surfaces of the rods are exposed to
ambient air at 20°C.
By measuring the length of each rod with a thermocouple, it is observed that the
the temperatures of the rods were the same at positions xA = 0.15 m and xB =
0.075 m, measures from the base surface. If it is known that the
thermal conductivity of rod A eskA = 70 W/m·K, determine the value of
kB for rod B.
Exercise 3.113
An experimental setup to measure the thermal conductivity of materials
solids involves the use of two long rods that are equivalent in all
aspects, except that one is made of a standard material of
known thermal conductivity, kA, while the other is made with the
material whose thermal conductivity, kB, is desired to be known. Both rods
one end is attached to a heat source of fixed temperature Tb, they are exposed to
a fluid at temperature T∞, and they are equipped with thermocouples to measure the
temperature at a fixed distance x1 from the heat source. If the standard material
it is aluminum, kA = 200 W/m·K, and the measurements reveal values of ΔTA = 75°C
yTB = 60°C ax1 paraTb = 100°C yT∞ = 25°C, what is the conductivity?
thermal
kB of the test material?
Exercise 3.124
An air heater consists of a steel tube (k= 20 W/m·K), with radii
internal and external der1 = 13 mm yr2 = 16 mm, respectively, and eight fins
longitudinals fully made, each with a thickness of 3 mm. The
fins extend to a concentric tube, which has a radius of 40 mm and is insulated
on the external surface. Water at temperature T∞,i= 90°C flows through the
internal tube, while air at T∞,o = 25°C flows through the annular region
formed by the largest concentric tube.
(a) Draw the equivalent thermal circuit of the heater and relate each
thermal resistance with the appropriate system parameters.
(b) Sihi= 5000 W/m2·K yho= 200 W/m2·K, what is the heat transfer?
per unit of length?
(c) Evaluate the effect of increasing the number of fins and/or the thickness of the
heat transfer results, subject to the restriction that N t < 50
mm.
