central University, established through an Act of Parliament in 1985, has just completed its 25th year of existence. The campus is spread over 780 acres of land with lush green tropical vegetation; and its entire campus is Wi-Fi enabled. It has emerged as Indias fastest expanding Central University crossing growth mark of 300% during the last four years and has about 5000 students now representing 33 states of the country and abroad, and over 450 highly qualified faculty from across the country. It has a state of the art Library with remote access to over 31,000 digital information resources through a dedicated library portal (www.pondiuni.edu.in).

Besides a two-year Masters, this University offers 5 years Integrated programmes in Physics, Chemistry, Applied Geology, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science and Economics. The University also has two campuses at Karaikal (150 Kms. south of Pondicherry) and at Port Blair offering Post-Graduate & Doctoral programmes. As an affiliating University, it has 5 Medical colleges, 16 Engineering Colleges, 30 Colleges of Education and 19 Arts and Science Colleges. Over 37,000 students are enrolled in these affiliated colleges. Pondicherry University was the first University to adopt the CBCS and Semester system which easily facilitates the mobility of students with credit transfer both in India and abroad. The University is growing with a cardinal principle of Expansion with Excellence and Equity and remains connected globally. More than 27 MoUs have been signed with International Universities and National institutions for exchange of faculty and students.

The University has modern laboratories equipped with sophisticated analytical instruments, facilities for sports and fitness, 24 hours medical facility and a host of other amenities that make the campus self-contained and provide an ambience for academic pursuit. The University offers 157 Masters, Doctoral and Diploma programmes in 34 Departments, 10 Centres and two Chairs under the umbrella of 15 Schools. It has a Community College and Directorate of Distance Education offering Business Management programmes.

AdMISSION NORMS
The selection for admission to all the programmes, and Ph.D., M.C.A and M.Tech., is done exclusively on the basis of marks scored in the all-India entrance examination. For Ph.D. research, candidates qualifying under JRF/ examination of UGC/CSIR/NET/ or such other examination recognized by the University with fellowship are exempted from the entrance exam. In accordance with the policy of the Government of India and the guidelines of the University Grants Commission, the University reserves 15% of seats in each course for candidates belonging to SC and 7.5% for those belonging to ST with a provision for inter-changeability between these categories, and 27% for OBC. 25% seats are reserved for students of the Union Territory in select programmes and 3% for differently-abled.

CREdIt REquIREMENtS
The University offers the Choice-Based Credit System where students have options with a wide variety of soft core & hard core subjects & electives. Project work, seminars, assignments, tests and terminal examinations are part and parcel of its evaluation system. The University has a separate Directorate of Distance Education from 1995, offering a variety of courses at PG level. The courses offered by the Directorate are innovative and job oriented. twINNING pROGRAMMES
The University has recently introduced the concept of offering courses under Twinning Programme by entering into a Memorandum of Understanding with reputed institutions having well qualified faculty, infrastructure and learning facilities. Twinning is an innovative educational concept which widens the scope of educational opportunity and access for students, keeping in view their weekly schedules of learning time. It envisages a tie-up between the Directorate of Distance Education, Pondicherry University and an existing reputed institute. The programmes which are offered by the University through the distance mode are offered at these institutions. The marked difference of Twinning Programme from the conventional Distance Education programmes is that the students undergo a rigorous extended classroom session on all week-ends/ evening hours during the academic year, instead of the usual personal contact programmes conducted once in a semester.

RESEARCH
The University has a strong research culture. About 90% of the faculty have Ph.D. degrees and are all actively involved in research supervision with independent and collaborative research projects funded by various agencies. More than 1000 research scholars are working on campus, pursuing their Ph.D. research, and this number is expected to cross 1500 in next two years. The citation index of 6.16 and h-index of 33 (for last 15 years) of our faculty publications are well above many of the best Universities in the country. The level of extra-mural funding from government agencies and industries has touched more than 70 crores with over 260 research projects, and this number is progressively increasing. The funding has more than tripled during the last three years. Seven departments have FIST-funding from the Ministry of Science and Technology. LIbRARY
Ananda Rangapillai Library is presently a Knowledge Resource Centre of the University facilitating learning and research. The infrastructure, collection and services have developed on par with any world class university. programmes, workshops, exhibitions, conferences, computing facility for the Visually Challenged and student support Earn While you learn scheme are provided. The latest is the University Bookshop as student support service to cater to their requirements of Books, Stationary and Souvenirs.

COLLECTION
Library collection is hybrid with its traditional information resources being gradually supplemented by the electronic resources. Print collection of nearly 2 lakhs and e-collection of 31,000 plus, comprising a digital library of e-books, e-journals, e-databases, e-theses, etc., are all accessible through the library portal.

INFRASTRUCTURE
An independent library building with a beautiful, inspiring ambience of greenery around is focused in developing with technology. The spaces have been revamped and modernized with modular furniture and large number of computers to access e-resources with high speed bandwith facility. The Campus is Wi-Fi enabled which facilitates access to library resources. An additional new building of 50,000 sq.ft. is under construction to offer 24 hour reading facility, a state of the art section for the visually challenged, and a childrens library.

ELECtRONIC MEdIA
The Electronic Media Centre was established during the year 2007. It has the state-of-the art multimedia laboratory with latest media hardware and software for teaching and learning, production of radio, video, animation & print communication systems. The Centre has a T.V. Programme production studio with a dozen of 3CCD cameras, good number of cool lights, teleprompter and three sets of multichannel video and audio editing suites. The studio is fully equipped with multicamera setup using two beta-cams, monitors, DVCAM tape, blue ray disk recorders, home theater system and outdoor shooting equipment. Production crew communication systems are also a part of the studio facility. This media centre is fully air-conditioned with 100% power backup. The multimedia lab has the facility to develop computer graphics and animation films. The Centre has a good number of experienced production staff and technical resources. The University is likely to get an EMMRC from UGC during 2011.

fM RAdIO - CRS
The University has started a Community Radio Station (CRS) under FM mode. The name of the radio is Puduvai vaani and its frequency is FM 107.8 MHz. It has its own audio recording studio, transmission wing, and an editing suite. The broadcast schedule is 6 a.m to 9 p.m on week days, and 6 a.m to 6 p.m on Saturdays and Sundays. This Centre produces audio lessons for teaching-learning from elementary school to University level students, public, N.G.O.s, women and children.

COMputER CENtRE
The University has a 64 mbps voice and data network under Wi-Fi mode covering the entire campus. Pondicherry University is one among the few institutions in the country to be provided free 1Gbps connectivity to the National Knowledge Network (NKN) which is an ambitious project of the Government of India to connect all Universities and colleges in the country. NKN would serve as a platform to share knowledge among the educational institutions to facilitate our country to emerge as a global knowledge player/ resources. The Computer Centre provides consultancy for identifying proper configuration of computer systems, network systems and renders web and e-mail services to the University community as well to other government and non-government organizations. Every department and School has exclusive computer laboratory for students

tHEAtRE ANd pERfORMING ARtS


A big attraction for overseas students is the theatre workshops organized in association with national and international institutions by the School of Performing Arts. An exclusive mini-theatre is available in the school for this purpose. Eminent personalities from film and TV industries participate in the production and performance works.

GuESt HOuSE
The University has a fully furnished, air-conditioned guest house, with four V.I.P. suites, 20 guest rooms, seminar hall, dining hall, hall for art-exhibitions and an auditorium.

tRANSIt HOStEL
In order to provide accommodation to the visiting faculty and the newly joining faculty, the University has a transit hostel facility with fully furnished eight flats within the campus.

pLACEMENt CELL
To provide ample opportunities to students to get proper placement in industries and companies, the Placement Cell conducts workshops, mock interviews and organizes on-campus selection process with the help of industries. About 1000 students are getting this benefit every year.

StAff quARtERS
For providing residential accommodation to the faculty and staff, a good number of independent quarters and apartments have been constructed within the campus.

HEALtH CENtRE
Round the clock health checkup facility is provided in the campus by the University Health Centre with in-house medical officers and duty doctors from P.I.M.S. The Health Centre has an ambulance service, mini O.P.D., dispensary and check up rooms.

dAY CARE CENtRE & pRE-pRIMARY SCHOOL


Since 2007, the University runs an air-conditioned Day Care Centre for the benefit of the children of employees. This Centre is professionally managed by trained staff. The service is free of cost. For the benefit of the wards of faculty, staff and scholars, a pre-primary school has also been established within the campus.

CAMpuS tRANSpORt
The University has provided free transport facilities to all students commuting from Puducherry and suburban areas. For this purpose, 13 buses, vans and mini-buses are made available.

CANtEEN ANd StORES


There are 4 canteens on campus in addition to snack and milk booths maintained by the co-operative societies. There is a co-operative store available for the students and staff residing within the campus.

SpORtS
Pondicherry University is known for its sports activities. The University has two outdoor stadiums, one with a capacity of 800 for foot-ball and a standard 400 meter track, and the other one being Rajiv Gandhi cricket stadium for 1000 with an international standard pitch. Besides, it also has tennis courts, volley ball courts and basketball courts. A 16-station multi-gymnasium including treadmill, bicycle ergo meter, bicycle elliptical meter, physiotherapy equipments, microwave diathermy, ultrasound, infrared indication and electrical muscles stimulation equipment are also available. The University conducts regular national level tournaments every year with the support of various sponsors. The facility is in addition to those provided in the exclusive gymnasiums for boys and girls.

SpECIAL COACHING SCHEME


To train the students to successfully face the competitive examination, a special coaching facility has been established with the U.G.C.s assistance. This facility has been also extended to some affiliated colleges. The University also organizes special coaching for competitive exams to students of disadvantaged sections.

fELLOwSHIpS ANd SCHOLARSHIpS


The University provides a set of fellowships to students and research scholars. The Ph.D. scholars with JRF in arts receive Rs. 16,000 per month for two years and Rs.18,000 per month after two years. They are also eligible for a contingent grant of Rs.10,000 and Rs.20,000 per annum respectively. Similarly, the Ph.D. scholars with JRF in science may get the same fellowship with a contingent grant of Rs. 20,000 per month. All the remaining scholars get UGC scholarship of Rs. 5,000 per month for Ph.D. and Rs.3,000 per month for M.Phil scholars. The SC/ST students get scholarships from the respective state government. There is also a scheme of merit scholarships, merit-cummeans scholarship and freeship to students who satisfy the eligibility norms. The students of five-year integrated courses get a scholarship of Rs.750 per month while progressing without any arrears. The students studying at Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are given a special allowance for their stay at Port Blair. The University, altogether, has 26 varieties of fellowship offered to students and scholars.

CAMpuS LIfE
The University is located along the East coast of India with a long & beautiful beach face. The campus life is unique with greenery, gardens, parks, and playgrounds. The Dean, Students Welfare, and Chief Wardens of the hostels of men and women, coordinate with all boarding and hostel facilities of the University. The University has 19 hostels for boys and girls, including foreign students with kitchen facilities to house the overseas students. Exclusive hostels are available for research scholars.

ENGINEERING ANd HORtICuLtuRE


The University Engineering division maintains the estate and properties of the campus, its infrastructure, and carries out all the maintenance work. It has civil and Electrical wings. The campus is covered with satellite TV channel receivers. This is probably the first educational institution in India having 100% power back-up through power generators. The Horticulture wing of the University maintains the gardens and lawns of the campus.
