1.Abstract:
This project addresses the imperative for evidence-based policymaking by
focusing on the development and analysis of environmental sustainability
indicators. It encompasses air, land, and water pollution, air quality index ,
Awareness on the RRR method (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), and mitigation
strategies. Through data-driven approaches, the project aims to equip policymakers
with actionable insights to address environmental challenges effectively.
2.Introduction:
This project aims to bridge the gap between data and policymaking by
developing comprehensive environmental sustainability indicators. By leveraging
advanced methodologies and technologies with the help of IBM Cognos
Analytics, the project seeks to empower policymakers with actionable insights to
mitigate environmental challenges and make the environment sustainable. The
inclusion of Awareness and mitigation strategies such as the RRR method
underscores the holistic nature of the project's approach.
3.Methodology:
Data Acquisition and Preparation:
● Identify relevant data sources such as government databases, research
institutions, or sensor networks and gather data on environmental
sustainability indicators such as air quality, water quality, energy
consumption, etc.
● Clean the data to remove errors, inconsistencies, and missing values.
● Transform the data into a format suitable for analysis, such as CSV, Excel, or
a database.
Model Selection and Training:
● Choose appropriate models based on the nature of the data and project
objective. This could include regression models, classification models, time
series analysis, etc.
● Split the data into training and testing sets to evaluate the performance of the
models.
● And train the selected models using the training data.
● Validate the trained models using the testing data to ensure they generalize
well to unseen data.
Data Exploration:
● Explore the data to gain insights into the relationships between different
environmental sustainability indicators by using IBM Cognos Analytics.
● Perform descriptive statistics to summarize the characteristics of the data.
Visualize the data using charts, graphs, and maps to identify patterns, trends,
and outliers.
● Conduct correlation analysis to understand the relationships between
variables.
Dashboard Creation:
● Design a dashboard to present the findings of your analysis in an interactive
and user-friendly manner.
● Select the appropriate visualization tools and libraries to create the
dashboard. Include key performance indicators (KPIs), charts, maps, and
filters to allow users to explore the data dynamically
● Ensure the dashboard is accessible and intuitive for policymakers and
stakeholders.
Evaluation:
● Evaluate the performance of models using appropriate metrics such as
accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, etc. Assess the effectiveness of the
dashboard in communicating the insights derived from the data.
● Collect feedback from policymakers and stakeholders to identify areas for
improvement.
● Iterate on analysis and dashboard design based on the evaluation results.
4.Existing Work:
A review of existing literature, projects, and initiatives related to
environmental sustainability indicators and data-driven policymaking informs the
project's methodology, with a particular focus on integrating indicators for air,
land, and water pollution, air quality index points, and mitigation strategies.By
creating interactive visualizations and dashboards to effectively communicate
findings to stakeholders.
5.Proposed Work:
Comprehensive Analysis:
Our project conducts a comprehensive analysis of environmental
sustainability indicators, including air quality index, water potability, and per
capita plastic waste generation. By considering multiple factors simultaneously,
our analysis provides a more understanding of environmental challenges and
opportunities for intervention.
Data-Driven Policy Development:
Unlike traditional approaches to policy development, which may rely on
anecdotal evidence or limited datasets, our project prioritizes data-driven
decision-making. By utilizing empirical evidence and rigorous analysis, our
policies are more likely to be effective and impactful in addressing pressing
environmental issues.
Targeted Interventions:
Rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach, our project proposes
targeted interventions tailored to specific environmental challenges and regional
contexts. This targeted approach increases the likelihood of success by addressing
the root causes of environmental degradation and leveraging local strengths and
resources.
Innovation in Solutions:
Our project emphasizes innovation in developing solutions to
environmental challenges. This may include the implementation of 3R Approach
strategy.By embracing innovation, our project drives continuous improvement and
fosters a culture of creativity and experimentation.
6.Software Requirements:

8. DATA COLLECTION AND PREPROCESSING:
1.Data acquisition and preparation:
Data Collection Methods:
Identified two websites relevant to the project objectives of Analyzing
Environmental Sustainability Indicators for Data Driven Policy Development.
Accessed the dataset from the below mentioned website and download it directly.
i)
https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/rohanrao/air-quality-data-in-india?select=station_
day.csv
ii) https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/uom190346a/water-quality-and-potability
iii)https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/sohamgade/plastic-datasets?select=plastic-was
te-per-capita.csv
Ensured that the dataset downloaded has the contents related to Environmental
Sustainability Indicators.
Dataset1: AIR QUALITY DATASET(STATION DAY)
The dataset contains air quality data and AQI (Air Quality Index) at daily
level of various stations in India.
Dataset2: WATER QUALITY AND POTABILITY
This dataset contains water quality measurements and assessments related
to potability, which is the suitability of water for human consumption. The dataset's
primary objective is to provide insights into water quality parameters and assist in
determining whether the water is potable or not. Each row in the dataset represents
a water sample with specific attributes, and the "Potability" column indicates
whether the water is suitable for consumption.
Dataset3: PER CAPITA PLASTIC WASTE
This dataset contains per capita plastic waste (kg/person/day) for the
year 2010.
Data Cleaning:
The datasets were reviewed to remove any missing values by replacing
it with some other values.
Duplicate entries in the dataset are also checked and removed by
utilizing excel .Now the dataset is consistent and ready for further process.
Data Integration:
Ensured the compatibility of the file formats such as csv or excel.
Combined the datasets to form a single unified dataset and thus by
merging or integrating the dataset paved the way for analyzing data much easier.
Also performing necessary data transformation and cleaning process to
make the dataset available for analysis.
By utilizing Excel we can merge the 3 datasets in a single excel file that
has 3 sheets which further helps to analyze the data.
Data Transformation:
Data Transformation involves a series of operations aimed at cleansing,
standardizing, and enriching the data to ensure consistency and compatibility
across different sources.
i)Convert the numerical variable to categorical variable - In the water
quality and potability dataset (potability column) 0 means not potable and 1 means
potable .In the integrated dataset ,added an extra column with potable having the
categorical values as yes or no.
ii)Including or adding new features-Extracted the month number from
the date column .Used to analyse the data based on the paticular month number.
2.Data Module Conversion:
Data Cleaning:
The datasets were cleaned in such a way to replace missing values with
some default values. Also specify the digits after decimal point in the column to
format the data and also to make appearance of the data good looking.
Figure 1 Figure2
Figure3
The Figure1 shows that we replaced the missing values and Figure2
specified the number of digits after decimal point.
Data Integration:
A Consolidated Dataset “Environmental Sustainability Indicators” which
has indicators of environmental sustainability was uploaded into IBM Cognos
Analytics and the data module was created successfully.(Figure4)
Figure4(i)
Figure4(ii)
Data Transformation:
Introduced the new feature ‘POTABLE’ to the water quality datset
(Figure5) and potability dataset based on potability column value which further
enhance the details (if the water is potable or not ) .
Added the extra feature ‘Need awareness on 3R approach’ to the plastic
waste produced per capita dataset Figure6 which helps us to find which country
need more awareness on 3R(Reduce,Reuse,Recycle) Approach based on the
waste produced value.
Extracted the month column from the date column with the format (mm
dd yy) in Air Quality Index Dataset Figure7 helps to analyse the data based on the
particular month.

14.DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS:
Our project has revealed crucial insights into environmental sustainability
indicators, shaping strategic interventions for a healthier and more sustainable
future. Key achievements include:
● Air Quality Index:
o Identified seasonal patterns in Air Quality Index (AQI), with high
levels during January, February, November, and December, signaling
poor air quality conditions.
o Detected unusual AQI patterns in July, August, September, and
December, indicating potential variations in air pollution sources or
meteorological factors.
o Highlighted specific stations (GJ001 and DL002) with consistently
high AQI values, underscoring the urgency of targeted air pollution
mitigation measures.
● Ozone Concentration:
o Revealed elevated ozone (O3) concentrations during May,
emphasizing the importance of addressing ozone pollution as a
significant environmental concern.
● Water Potability :
o Noted that over half of the observations indicated non-potable water,
underscoring the pressing need for water quality management
measures to safeguard public health and environmental integrity.
● Per Capita Plastic Waste :
o Identified a substantial need for awareness on the 3R (Reduce, Reuse,
Recycle) approach in approximately 75% of countries, indicating a
critical challenge in plastic waste management.
o Recognized India's relatively low per capita plastic waste value,
suggesting opportunities for proactive measures to maintain
sustainable waste management practices.
● In summary, our project has provided valuable insights into air quality, water
potability, and plastic waste management challenges, informing targeted
interventions and awareness campaigns to promote environmental
sustainability.
15.PREDICTIVE ANALYSIS:
Air Quality Prediction:
● Utilize historical air quality data and meteorological factors to develop
predictive models for forecasting AQI levels.
● Implement early warning systems to alert vulnerable populations and
policymakers about potential air pollution episodes, especially during the
high-risk months of January, February, November, and December.
● Integrate emission reduction strategies, such as promoting clean energy
sources, improving transportation infrastructure, and enhancing industrial

17.CONCLUSION:
We've examined various environmental sustainability indicators and
derived key findings. In January, February, November, and December, the Air
Quality Index (AQI) consistently registers high levels, indicating poor air quality.
Conversely, during July, August, September, and December, the AQI exhibits
unusual patterns. Notably, ozone (O3) reaches its peak in May. Stations GJ001 and
DL002 consistently record the highest overall AQI values. Poor air quality is
particularly pronounced in January, February, November, and December.
Furthermore, our analysis of dataset indicates that over half of the
observations suggest non-potable water. Additionally, a significant portion of
countries (approximately 75% in the year 2010) require awareness regarding the
3R approach, highlighting the production of excessive plastic waste. Notably, India
shows a comparatively low per capita plastic waste value, suggesting lesser need
for awareness campaigns.Analysis of per capita plastic waste underscores the
necessity for widespread adoption of the 3R Approach across many countries.
These insights serve as crucial pillars in shaping our project strategy
towards promoting environmental sustainability.
