Business District General Membership Meeting Notes Shakabrah Java, May, 8 2012

Board Members in attendance: Kyle Prosser, Koreen Thompson, Dan Smith, Nick Fediay, David Printz, Chelsea Levy, Jim Sheridan, Diane Hagen, Natasha Thayer 8:00 8:07 Welcome, Self Introductions, Approval of April minutes President Update

Koreen discussed the Districts 2012 goals, specifically reminded members about the goals of membership involvement. 80-20 rule: traditionally 20% of the people in an organization due 80% of the work. Koreen challenged members to raise the bar and change the norm to help the district thrive. Key opportunities for member involvement include: leveraging AOA, increasing involvement in District Socials, committee and events, increase district revenue by $10,000 this year. Koreen challenged members to increase their participation in the district. Koreen asked for member ideas for increasing membership and events. Meeting attendees were encouraged to write their ideas on sticky notes spread throughout the room and stick them to the front board. 8:12 Treasurers Report

General Account balance: $10,000.13; AOA account balance: $1,538; The District currently has 90 paid members. 20 vendors have signed up for AOA to date. The District is actively looking for AOA sponsors. Contact Nick Fediay for more information. 8:17 City Council member(s) report

Lauren Walker, City Council has been focusing on economic development in the last month. Last week the council selected a number of projects to be completed by remaining bond funds. CM Walker is meeting with Hilltop Safeway today to discuss the sale of liquor in the Alcohol Impact Area following the passage of I-1183. The City will likely ask voters to increase their property taxes to pay for road improvements, more to come in the future. Jake Fey reported that Koreen and Nick met with CM Fey. They discussed many topics including identifying what the 6th Ave. Districts tax revenue contribution is to the City. 8:22 CLO report /Business Watch Group

TPD is still responding to vehicle prowls and has put together a CLO taskforce. A hotspot is on Friday and Saturday nights around Jazz Bones. This weekend there was a DUI emphasis involving several agencies. Five DUIs were charged along 6th Ave. Burglaries have decline from 28 per week at their peak to 3-5 per week now that suspect has been arrested. A vehicle prowler at UPS had a gun and fired shots

at a TPD officer. The suspect dropped his ID during the scuffle and there is currently a warrant for his arrest. Sonia Jewell is the Business Watch Liaison and is asking for businesses to participate in a District-wide phone tree. 8:30 City Dept. of Economic Development report

Ryan Petty is presenting to the Councils Economic Development Committee meeting at 10 am this morning. Comcast Neighborhoods is running an episode on 6th Ave. right now. Later this summer the show will be available on Comcast online. The Citys urban forester will be coming to the Design Committee this month to discuss trees on the Ave., their maintenance and planting. 8:35 Spotlight on Business The Gurus, David Printz

The Gurus manage computer networks for small businesses, providing network support and computer fixes for businesses that dont have internal IT Departments. 8:38 Art on the Ave Update

The theme of this years AOA is food. Over 70 bands have expressed interest in performing at AOA. Quincy is pursuing Pabst Blue Ribbon as the Main Event Sponsor. The AOA committee is actively seeking sponsorships. Sponsor benefits include online and print advertising, business name on event signage, Advertisements are available in the event program through Mario Lorenz. Organization Diane Hagen looking for volunteers to write for the District Newsletter to spot light businesses and write about district events. Email her if you you are interested. Promotion Nick Fediay announced that following the General Membership meeting Hemisphere Design who has been contracted to update the Districts brand and website will be presenting brand ideas. Once the branding is complete Hemisphere will focus on transforming the website into a true promotional tool for district members. The AOA committee is working on a Kickstarter ad to raise $2,500 to bring the Glass Museum mobile hot shop to AOA. Design Dan Smith provided an update on the Districts Farmers Market Booth, which is now available for members to rent at the reduced price to sell your products and advertise your business. The annual District clean up occurred last week. The Committee is working to fix the cigarette cans that were purchased last year and are now falling apart. Economic Restructuring Applied for an innovative grant for improved lighting on the Ave.

Bike Corral update, Diane Wiatr, Community and Economic Development. Diane does bike and pedestrian planning at the City. May is Bike Month and in honor of it. The Citys first Bike Corral will be installed in front of Red Hot. Portland has 172 corrals. In one parking space you can fit 14 bicycles. Even if you dont ride a bicycle it benefits everyone by getting people out of their cars and freeing up parking spaces for those who need them. Chris from Red Hot announced that May 31st Red Hot will host a bike-centrict celebration with an outdoor movie and beer. There will be bicycle giveaways. The City is starting to build the core of a bicycle network this summer with 13 miles of bike lanes. CORK! Has won the community partner of the year award from United Way. Competitors included Boeing and Key Bank. Congratulations Nick and the CORK crew. Next month Member spotlight Diane Hagen, Statefarm Next month Tip of the Month - North End Physical Therapy Tacoma cash mob will be on 6th Ave. this week. Everyone who attends pledges to spend $10 at the selected business. Social Media Club Tacoma is discussing Pintrest at the Harmon Tap Room tonight at 6pm. Kelly Creso expressed concern that non-core members are taking a larger role in the district. Koreen responded by saying that The Board has continually asked for core member involvement. Koreen encourage core members to get more engaged in the district. Wes Rodgers expressed concern about a Board email that was forwarded to him. He thought the email was inappropriately critical. Given the short amount of time left in the meeting, Wes was invited to discuss his concerns with any board members and attendees willing to stay after the meeting. Jim Sheridan described the ORCA pass program, which offers $215 bus passes to members.
