SCHOOL OF ELECTRICAL AND COMMUNICATION

DEPARTMENT OF ECE
VTR UGE - 2021
SUMMER 2024-2025
QUESTION BANK

UNIT -1 FUNDAMENTALS OF ITS

Course Code & Title: 10213EC111 – Intelligent Transport Systems

Course Category: Open Elective
Part – A Questions and Answers
1. What are the causes of accidents?
 Over Speeding.
 Drunken Driving.
 Distractions to Driver
 Red Light Jumping
 Avoiding Safety Gear like Seat belts and Helmets.
 Non-adherence to lane driving and overtaking in a wrong manner

2. What is ITS?
 An intelligent transportation system (ITS) is the application of sensing, analysis, control
and communications technologies to ground transportation to improve safety, mobility
and efficiency.
 Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) apply information and communication technologies
to transport. Computers, electronics, satellites and sensors are playing an increasingly
important role in our transport systems.

3. State the significance of ITS

ITS) refers to information and communication technology, applied to transport
infrastructure and vehicles, that improve transport outcomes such as:
 Transport Safety
 Transport Productivity
 Travel Reliability
 Informed Travel Choices
 Social Equity
 Environmental Performance
 Network Operation Resilience

4. Mention the applications of ITS.

 Traffic Management
 Traffic Signal Systems
 Global Positioning Systems/Navigation
 Weather Information System
 Real-Time Traveler Information
 Parking Guidance Systems

5. What are the four steps in ITS?

 Data Collection
 Data Transmission
 Data analysis
 Traveller information

6. What are the needs for ITS?

 Inadequate road development
 Low speed, increased accident rates
 It is not possible to build enough new roads or to meet the demand.
 Make transportation systems more efficient, secure, and safer using information,
communications, and control technologies
 Improve the attractiveness of public transport
 Tackle rising congestion which increases travel times and industry costs.
 Reduce the environmental impacts of transport

7. Mention a few stakeholders in ITS.

Certificate body, Police, Public transport, consumer, service enabler, advertiser, Traffic
manager, Road operator, Ministry, Municipality/corporation.

8. What are the environmental benefits of ITS?

 Reduction or elimination of polluting emissions at the point of use
 Reduction or elimination of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions
along the length of the fuel chain
 Elimination of some resource extraction and its negative consequences

9. What is GPS?
 The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a
network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense.
 GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made
the system available for civilian use.
 GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.

10. Mention a few functional areas of ITS

 Traffic Signal Control
 Freeway management
 Transit Management
 Electronic toll payment
 Incident management
 Emergency management services
11. What is the significance of Electronic Toll Management?
Electronic toll collection (ETC) is a wireless system to automatically collects the usage fee or
toll charged to vehicles using toll roads, HOV lanes, toll bridges, and toll tunnels. Vehicles
using the system are equipped with an automated radio transponder device. When the
vehicle passes a roadside toll reader device, a radio signal from the reader triggers the
transponder, which transmits back an identifying number which registers the vehicle's use of
the road, and an electronic payment system charges the user the toll.

12. Why do we need Information management services?

Real-time traffic information such as average vehicle speed, travel time, traffic flow, and
traffic congestion can be used by road users and the ministry of transportation to improve
the level of service for roadways.

13. What are the various methods to avail real-time traffic information?
 Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET)
 Universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) and
 Long-term evolution (LTE)
 Vehicle detector
 Global position system (GPS) based probe car reporting
 Cellular floating vehicle data (CFVD)

14. What is the use of ICT?

Information and communications technology (ICT) can be used to analyze real-time traffic
information to forecast the future traffic condition for road user decisions.

15. Sketch the block diagram of ICT

16. Mention the challenges in ITS

 Cities unable to raise enough financing for such intelligent projects
 Cities already developed into an unplanned complex maze, and sorting out such a
maze would require land acquisition and raze of established buildings, the legality
and implementation of which is a bottleneck
 Commercial centres jot distributed around the city
 Maintenance of such systems accompanied by insufficient cyber security

17. What are the components of ITS?

 Accurate tracking system

 Electronic timetables
 Smart model to predict the time of arrival
 Comfortable seats
 Standardization by regulating authority

18. What are the potentials of ITS?

 Reliable, simple and legible for citizens.
 Will cut down the time loss of citizens and enhance the productivity of human capital.
 increase the use of public transport. The use of buses dipped from 11.1% in 1951 to 1.11% in
2011, which is a matter of concern.
 will be a boost to the tourism industry.
 pollution will be reduced, which is in line with India's commitment in COP, Paris to reduce
carbon content by 35% of the 2006 level by 2030

19. What are the components of an Adaptive Navigation System?

 Routing and dispatching system
 Emergency
 Mobility and Knowledge Exchange

20. What are the steps in Machine Learning?

 Data processing
 Model design
 Data training
