Traditional AI

Traditional AI, also known as Narrow or Weak AI, is a subset of artificial intelligence designed to perform specific tasks using pre-defined algorithms and data analysis. It is characterized by programmed intelligence, restricted applications, and limited learning capabilities, making it effective for tasks like virtual assistants, recommendation systems, and fraud detection. However, its limitations include an inability to create new content, generalize, or adapt to unexpected situations.

Traditional (Narrow or Weak) AI
1. Traditional AI (also referred to as Narrow or Weak
AI) is a subset of artificial intelligence that is used to
perform tasks based on predetermined algorithms.
2. Traditional AI perform specific tasks by analyzing
data, identifying patterns, and making predictions. It's
designed to follow a set of pre-defined rules or inputs,
allowing it to efficiently carry out tasks such as
recognizing images, recommending products, or
answering specific queries
3. Traditional AI is reactive focused on processing and
analyzing data to provide predictions or insights.

Characteristics of Traditional AI
The main characteristics of Narrow AI include:
• Programmed intelligence – Traditional AI works based on
preprogrammed algorithms and rules. The system provides solutions and
performs tasks within the limitations of its algorithm developed by
programmers.
• Restricted applications – These AI models are designed with a specific set
of tasks in mind, limiting their scope of potential applications.
• Data analysis – Traditional AI focuses on analyzing sets of data and
making predictions based on this analysis. It can be successfully used for
creating forecasts and other data analysis.
• Limited learning capabilities – The learning capabilities of Narrow AI are
limited and dependent on data sets inputted by the human creator.

Example of Traditional AI Systems

1. Virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa

2. Netflix's recommendation system
3. Computer chess programs
These systems are highly efficient within their
defined boundaries but lack the ability to create
new content.

Traditional AI role in Real Life
From automated customer service bots to recommendation engines on streaming
platforms, traditional AI has been working behind the scenes, powering many of the
systems we interact with daily
1. SEARCH ENGINES
• AI and machine learning have significantly improved search algorithms, making
them more intuitive and responsive. These technologies help search engines
understand user intent and deliver personalized results
2. SPAM FILTERS
• AI plays a crucial role in keeping email inboxes free from unwanted messages.
Spam filters rely on AI to detect and block unsolicited emails, analyzing patterns
in messages, wording, and metadata to identify spam.
3. VIRTUAL ASSISTANTS
• Virtual assistants have become an essential part of modern life, all thanks to AI.
Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, and Google Assistant have transformed how we
interact with technology. These voice-powered assistants use AI to understand and
respond to spoken commands.

4. RECOMMENDATION SYSTEMS
• Companies like Amazon, Netflix, and YouTube have been using AI-powered
algorithms for years to suggest products, shows, or videos tailored to users'
preferences.
• The systems analyze viewing habits and patterns and apply techniques like
collaborative filtering, content-based filtering, and machine learning to deliver
personalized recommendations that keep users engaged

5. AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES
• Autonomous vehicles leverage AI and computer vision to revolutionize how cars
navigate roads. Tesla and Waymo have integrated these technologies to handle
tasks like identifying obstacles, mapping routes, and making split-second
decisions.

6. FRAUD DETECTION
• Financial institutions have been using AI for years to spot fraudulent transactions.
Machine learning models analyze transaction patterns and flag unusual activities
that might indicate fraud in real time.
• These systems learn and adapt over time, improving their ability to detect fraud
with greater accuracy and speed. As a result, AI has become a vital tool in
protecting businesses and customers from financial risks.
7. MEDICAL IMAGING AND DIAGNOSTICS
• AI is pivotal in analyzing medical images like X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans,
offering doctors a more accurate way to detect diseases such as cancer. AI-
powered tools, such as Google’s DeepMind, are capable of identifying patterns
and abnormalities that may go undetected by the human eye.
• These advancements are helping healthcare professionals make quicker, more
precise diagnoses to improve patient outcomes.

8. PREDICTIVE TEXT
• Predictive text features, such as autocorrect and text suggestions on smartphones
and word processors, are powered by machine learning models.
• The systems analyze past typing patterns to predict the next word or correct
spelling errors, making typing faster and more efficient.
9. CUSTOMER SERVICE CHATBOTS
• AI-powered chatbots have been widely adopted in customer service, where they
provide automated responses to common queries. These chatbots, often powered
by machine learning, can assist customers in real time answering questions,
troubleshooting problems, and directing users to helpful resources.
• 10. FACIAL RECOGNITION
• AI-powered facial recognition systems have become a standard tool used in
everything from security systems to social media platforms. These systems are
used to identify and authenticate individuals based on facial features.
• Facial recognition helps with surveillance, access control, and identity verification
in security systems.

When to Choose Traditional AI
1. You need to solve well-defined, structured problems
like prediction, classification, or optimization.
2. In sectors like healthcare, finance, or regulated
industries where explainability and transparency are
essential.
3. For tasks like fraud detection or online
recommendations where real-time performance and
reduced computational requirements are crucial.
4. You need to deploy models quickly and effectively, and
your datasets are smaller and domain-specific.

Computer Science
limitation of traditional AI
1. The limitation of traditional AI is its inability to
create something new. It works within the
boundaries of its programming.
2. Its scope of operations is limited. The model uses
data analysis to identify patterns, make predictions,
and perform specific tasks.
3. Only task-specific, otherwise requires retraining.
4. Cannot generalize
5. Cannot switch tasks
6. Cannot manage unexpected situations
