BMS - statistics for business decision making.
Assignment 1 - 10 marks
Question 1 - Give di erence between qualitative and quantitative data ?
Question 2- Make a table of all the formulas used in measure of central tendency and measure
of dispersion, moments, skewness, kurtosis, correlation and regression.
Question 3 - Example 15:If the median is 27.41 and Mode is 25.63 for the following data, nd the
missing frequencies.
C.I. 0-10 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60
Frequency 12 — 27 20 — 6
Question 4 - (i) De ne correlation and discuss its properties
(ii) The coe cient of determination of a ser of data points is 0.709 and the slope of
the regression line is -3.58. Determine the correlation coe cient of the data.
(iii) The correlation coe cient between X and Y for 20 items is 0.3. The mean of X
is 15 and that of Y is 20 while the respective standard deviations are 4 and 5. At the time of
calculation, one item 27 has wrongly been taken as 17 in the case of X series and 35 instead of 30
in Y series. Find the correct correlation coe cient.
Question 5 - Enumerate the properties of regression coe cients, Given the regression equation
of y on X and X on y are respectively y=2X and 6X-Y=4 and the second moment of X about the
origin is 3. Find the correlation coe cient and standard deviation of y.
Question 6- 1) Di erentiate between mathematical and positional averages and explain their
utility. A Factory works in two shifts: I and II. The details of wages paid to the workers in the two
shifts are as follows:
Particulars Shift I Shift II
No. of Workers 80 120
Wages paid per day (INR) 47,440 86,400
Standard deviation (INR) 105 110
Find the mean wages paid in the two shifts. Also calculate the combined mean and combined
Standard deviation of the entire set of workers. Determine which group has greater variability
in wages. Given that the modal wage paid to all the workers at the factory is Rs 785,
Comment on the skewness of the distribution of wages. Use the combined mean and standard
Deviation to estimate the number of workers who earn within the range defined by ̅ ± 2
(Mean plus/minus twice standard deviation). Give reason for your answer.
Question 7 - Calculate the mean, median and mode for the following data-

Question 11- The following data gives the average rainfall (in cm) in an area and yield of a crop (in
tons). Find the Karl Pearson’s coefficient of correlation between them. Are the two
related to each other?
Rainfall 120 168 170 165 150 172 180 175
