Selene
Selene
Selene, Goddess of the Moon, is the sister of Helios, God of the Sun, and Eos, Goddess of Dawn.
daughter of Hyperion, the Sun and Light, and Theia, the Shine. Later she was associated and
incorporated into Artemis or Hecate, assuming the role of Goddess of the Moon,
probably through an identification with the Goddess Bendis.
During the nights when there is a moon, Selene rides across the skies on a horse,
ou num carro puxado por cavalos arados, ou ainda puxado por bois (sendo nesses
cases crowned with a hat in which the horns of the bull form a crescent.
Then it lands and before taking off again it bathes in the Ocean.
Through Orphic traditions, Selene was associated with horses and the fertility of the moon, well
as the queen of the night. There is a myth in which she falls in love with a
pastor, Endymion, and ends up asking Zeus to make him immortal. Zeus does it, but he
he lies asleep eternally and Selene visits him since then, shining upon him and
having even daughters with him. In this myth, she is associated not only with fertility but also with
passing of the seasons.
Selene also had a daughter with Zeus, Pandeia, the Totally Divine, the year.
In addition to her, she had four daughters with her brother Hélio, the Horai, the seasons of the year.
that preside over the sky.
Associated with the night and the moon, Selene is also the Goddess of lunatics, a word that
it derives from its Latin name, Luna. Furthermore, it is associated with those who work
during the night which are, by excellence, the witches.
The titans Theia and Hyperion had three children, the most beautiful children of Olympus:
Selene - the moon, Helius - the sun and Eos - the dawn. Other gods, envying the beauty
the children of Téia cast Helius into the black waters of Eridanus.
When Selene dived in search of her brother, she was swallowed by the waters. To
to know the tragic fate of her children, Téia searched for them all over the world and
tired fell asleep.
Upon waking, Téia saw her children in the sky, illuminating both the suffering and the
joy of mortals: Eos - the Dawn, opened the doors for the arrival of Helius -
the Sun - which accompanied the day. Selene - the goddess of the moon - accompanied the night.
The young girl had skin as white as snow and was traveling in a carriage of
silver pulled by two horses. With its silver cloak, it carries a torch and
there is a crescent moon on your head.
Selene had never been interested in any man. Her pale image and
lonely was crossing the skies in a routine of pure melancholy. One night she
was watched by the dreamy eyes of the shy Endymion, a handsome shepherd
from Thessaly who took the herd to the top of the mountain to be able to observe
the mother up close. By contemplating her so much, he managed to understand the
capricious lunar cycle that was a mystery to everyone.
So much did Selene want to meet Pastor Endimion, as she kept seeing him contemplating her.

found Endimion asleep in the open air on top of the mountain. His sleep was
serene and his gentle demeanor touched Selene's heart, making her feel overwhelmed.
