Ports and Shipping form an integral part of the maritime sector and contribute greatly to the economic growth of the country.

An Affiliating University
The Indian Maritime University, established through an Act of Parliament on 14/11/2008 as a Central University, is poised to play a key role in the development of required Human Resources for the maritime sector. 1. B.Tech Marine Engineering


The role of the Marine Engineer: The Marine Engineer was born the day the French Inventor Denis Papin constructed a Steam boat powered by his steam engine in 1704. Since then, the Marine Engineer has come a long way. From steam to diesel engines at the turn of the last century and now on to automated and computer controlled machinery and equipment. Thus the role of the Marine Engineer is constantly changing with new challenges being regularly thrown up. The Marine Engineer needs a probing mind and strong conceptual skills to keep up with the rapid developments in Technology. With practically no outside assistance, he or she needs strong analytical skills and the ability to work with the team in order to maintain and repair the machinery when the Ship is out at Sea.

Reduced manning scales means social isolation in an atmosphere similar to a space craft and the modern seafarer has to be conditioned to meet the demands this will make on his mental make up. Sea life is arduous. The vagrant weather, the potential dangers of the working environment and the mental and physical stresses all require a highly motivated and trained person on board. Not only an effective education but also a grueling training is required to prepare a person for a career at Sea. There is this picture of a big ship sailing on a calm ocean under a blue sky that is captioned If something goes wrong here, you cannot walk home. This effectively sums up the responsibility and the challenges that a marine Engineer needs to take on, in his career at Sea.

Shipping is the most cost effective mode of transport and it is no wonder that 90% of the worlds cargo is moved by ships. We live in a world where our natural resources are diminishing and our Ecology is under threat. Technology is advancing to meet the challenges. A Nation looks to its manpower for development in the shipping industry, we need to turn to our Marine Engineer who will, operate and maintain the ships of the future and to ensure that they will work with success. With the noble vision- To make every Marine Engineer a success and no marine Engineer a failure, The IMU prepares young people to meet the future confidently. The four year B.Tech Marine Engineering course is a course leading to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency, awarded by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India, after 6 months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Marine Engineers on board Merchant ships anywhere in the world. This course is strictly residential.

Entry Requirements: Academic Standards:


A pass in 10+ 2 or its equivalent examination with minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, C hemistry and Mathematics group, and at least 50% in English at 10th or 12th standard.

Age:
17 to 25 years as on August 2012 SC/ST : relaxable as per Government guidelines.

Physical and Medical Standards


Medically fit as per the standards set by merchant shipping Medical Examination Rules, 2000 as amended from time to time. Eye Sight: Distance vision (unaided) 0.5 (values given in Snellen Decimal Notation) (6/12) in each eye or 0.67 (values given in Snellen Decimal Notation). (6/9) in better eye and 0.33 (Values given in Snellen Decimal Notation) and (6/18) in other eye. Normal colour vision.

Eligibility:
Unmarried (male/female) Indian Citizens and few seats for foreign nationals.

Seat Reservation:
As per Government of India directives.

Mode of Selection:
It involves 2 stages

Course Fee
The course fee per annum is Rs.1,97,500/- and another sum of Rs.27,500/- being the programme fee of IMU per annum. In addition to this, Counseling fee of Rs.10,000/- (non-refundable) has to be paid at the time of counseling. The fees are to be paid in the form of a Demand Draft drawn in favour of IMU payable at Chennai.

2. B.Sc. SHIP BUILDING & REPAIR


Aim and Objectives
The programme is designed to educate and train the students in ship building technology with a view to perform shop floor work at ship building or ship repair industries. The programme is designed as a combination of Lectures, Practicals and workshop and apprenticeship at a shipyard. The lectures and practicals are equally divided during the duration of the programme. The programme will have six semesters of which two semesters of lectures will be conducted by IMU. The remaining four semesters will be conducted by the Institute of which one semester will be theory (lectures) and the remaining three semesters will be practicals with a major focus towards practicals.

Duration
The programme of three years comprises of six semesters. A student is expected to complete the programme in 3 years period and those who could not do so can complete in within 5 years (not more than 10 semesters).

Entry Requirements
A pass in 10+2 or its equivalent examination with minimum 60% aggregate in the Physics, Chemistry and mathematics group, and at least 50% in English at 10th or 12th Standard.

Age

Physical Fitness
All qualified candidates will have to submit a Physical Fitness certificate from a Registered Medical Practitioner in a prescribed format that will be made available to them at an appropriate time.

Fees : Course fee of Rs.2,00,000/- per year and in addition counseling fee of Rs.10,000/- to be paid at the time of counseling. 3. THREE YEAR B.Sc. (Nautical Science) DEGREE COURSE
The Indian Maritime University Chennai invites applications from eligible unmarried candidates for the Common Entrance Test August 2012 to be conducted on 17th June 2012 from 1400 hours to 1700 hours for the three year residential B.Sc.(Nautical Science) Degree Course of Indian Maritime University conducted at IMU and its affiliated institutes. Applications for this course is invited for conduct in the following IMU campuses/IMU affiliated Colleges only: (a) IMU Chennai Campus (b) IMU Cochin Campus * AND (c) Affiliated colleges

After successful completion of the B.Sc.(Nautical Science) degree from IMU, the cadet is required to put in one year sea service on board merchant ships to be eligible to appear for the Certificate of Competency as Second Mate (F.G.) examination conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping,. On possession of a Certificate of Competency as Second Mate (Foreign Going), the officer is eligible for appointment as 3rd Officer / 2nd Officer. For further promotion as Chief Officer/Master, he/she has to pass Certificate of Competency Examination of Chief Mate (F.G.) /Master (F.G.) respectively after completion of required sea going service. The detailed syllabus, procedure and guidelines in respect of Certificate of Competency Examinations have been published in Merchant Shipping (Standards of Training Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers), Rules, 1998 volume I & II. The Indian Maritime University is under no responsibility or obligation to provide employment for the trainee cadet. On-board Ship training will be possible only after the candidate gets the placement on the Ship which shall be the responsibility of the candidate himself/herself. Shipping Companies/ Manning agents visit training institutes of repute and interview cadets for placements. Institutes assist the cadets in securing employment in training berth in various Shipping Companies. Candidates are advised not to fall prey to the promises made by UNAUTHORISED AGENTS FOR PLACEMENTS ON BOARD SHIPS AGAINST PAYMENT OF LARGE SUMS OF MONEY. Entry Requirement: Pass in 10 + 2 or equivalent examination from a recognized board / University with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) and English as a separate subject with a PCM average of not less than 60% and with minimum 50% marks in English language at either 10th or 12th standard exam conducted by a recognized board. Age Limit: Should not be more than 25 years as on 01 August 2012. The age limit is relaxable by 2 years in case of female candidates and 5 years for SC/ST candidates. Physical and medical standards: Medically fit as per the standards set by Merchant Shipping Medical Examination Rules, 2000 as amended from time to time. Eye Sight: 6/6 in each eye without visual aids. Normal colour vision. Candidates may have to undergo a full eyesight test conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) before being finally selected for the programme. Fee Structure: Rs.2,20,000/- per annum which includes IMU Programme Fees of Rs.27,500/- payable to IMU and Rs.10,000/- counseling fee at the time of counseling.

Note: 1.Fees includes mess charges, lodging charges, cost of uniform, cost of books, course fee for mandatory modular courses, tuition fees / training fees. 2. An amount of Rs.10,000/- has to be paid as separate demand draft /challan to the respective institute as Caution Money (interest free refundable at the end of the course) at the time of joining the institute. 3. Examination fees as prescribed by the University is to be paid separately. HOW TO APPLY 1. Download the application form, and payment challan from IMU website www.imu.tn.nic.in Remit Rs.800/- (General Category and OBC) and Rs.450/- for SC/ST candidates in any Branch of State Bank of India or Indian Bank or Axis Bank using the challan in the Account number given in the challan 2. The application form complete in all respects along with the copy of the payment challan and journal number filled (journal number will be filled by bank) to: The Controller of Examinations Indian Maritime University East Coast Road Uthandi, Chennai-600 119. SC/ST candidates who are remitting Rs.450/- are required to produce a copy of the Caste Certificate along with application. The applications should reach IMU on or before 31st May 2012. Applications received beyond the last date will not be entertained Admission Procedure 5. The admission for this programme is offered in August 2012. IMU invites applications from prospective candidates through advertisements in national and regional dailies detailing all the relevant information and criteria for admission. It is mandatory for all the candidates to qualify in the Common Entrance Test conducted by IMU to seek admission in B.Sc.(Ship Building & Repair), B.Tech (Marine Engineering) course and B.Sc. (Nautical Science) of IMU irrespective of whether their candidature is sponsored by a Shipping Company/DGS approved (RPS registered) manning agent or not. The eligible candidates in all respects i.e. educational qualifications, age, physical and medical standards and eye-sight are advised to apply for the Common Entrance Test conducted by IMU. Those appearing for qualifying examination (i.e. 10+2/ B.Sc./ B.Tech.) are also eligible to apply provided they meet all the eligibility criteria and produce the certificates to that effect to the IMU authorities for verification at the time of counseling and submit to the respective Institute at the time of joining the course. Various employing shipping companies/ their manning agents registered with the Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai may also advertise for the programme for selection of candidates for sponsorship clearly mandating that all such candidates will have to appear in the Entrance Examination to be conducted by IMU, for which the candidates shall make separate application to IMU. In case of Sponsored candidates, the companies are free to select IMU-CET qualified candidates of their choice and to set their own add-

on criteria of selection (Psychometric test / Written test/ Interviews/ Higher passing percentage in eligibility educational qualification examination etc.) provided they meet the minimum eligibility as prescribed in Eligibility given. All such aspirants must qualify in the IMU-CET. Thus, they need to additionally apply for the Common Entrance Test of IMU. For the Sponsored candidates it would be sufficient that they are declared qualified in the Common Entrance Test and are sponsored by the Shipping Companies / DGS approved RPS Manning Agents. All such Sponsored candidates who qualify in the Common Entrance Test conducted by IMU shall be selected by the Shipping Companies / DGS approved manning agents who sponsor such candidates for admission to be made at the respective Training Institute having tie-up with such companies. Thus, in case of sponsored candidates, this allocation of Training Institutes is directly done by the sponsoring shipping companies / registered manning agents and accordingly these sponsoring shipping companies / registered manning agents shall communicate to the Sponsored candidates as well as IMU, the name of Training Institute allotted to them as per the tie up between the sponsoring shipping companies /registered manning agents and the Training Institutes. 5. The Common Entrance Examination shall have 180 objective type multiple choice questions each carrying one mark each distributed in six subjects which are to be attempted during the 3 hours duration. The standard of this Common Entrance Test will generally be that of 10+2 level. These six subjects are as follows:

If the no. of candidates are inadequate at any centre , candidates will be required to write the exam at the nearest centre allotted There are two distinct forms in this Prospectus for the IMU- CET. The Application Form A is to be filled in by the candidate to get qualified in the IMU-Common Entrance Test. The same has to be submitted at the time of certificate verification in the case of sponsored candidates. The application form complete in all respects should be sent to Controller of Examinations; Indian Maritime University; East Coast Road; Uthandi; Chennai-600119 in an envelope super-scribed Application form for B.Tech Marine Engineering / B.Sc Ship Building & Repair / B.Sc. (Nautical Science) for Common Entrance Test along with proof of payment or payment challan or demand draft for Rs.800/(Rs.450/- for SC/ST candidates) drawn in favour of Indian Maritime University payable at Chennai. The applicants are advised to write their name, address and Phone No. on the reverse of the D.D. Incomplete Application Forms or those received after the due date (31st May 2012) will be summarily rejected and no enquiries will be entertained in this regard. The students are, therefore, advised to fill the relevant information carefully in the Application Form. The University will not accept any statement from the students about their ignorance in meeting these requirements. CANDIDATES ARE ADVISED TO RETAIN A PHOTOCOPY OF THE FILLED-IN APPLICATION FORM. On the basis of information furnished by the candidate in the Application Form, he/she will be sent an Admit Card for the Common Entrance Test. In case the candidate does not receive the same, he/she should

check for it on the website of IMU and take a printout of the same and paste his/her photograph over it and get it attested from a Gazetted Officer. At the time of Common Entrance Test, on this print out the candidate will be required to put his/her signature in the presence of Invigilator and thereafter the Invigilator will also put his signature on this copy. In case the candidates Admit card is also not found on the website, please contact the IMU along with the photocopy of the Application Form submitted by him/her for the issuance of a Duplicate Admit Card. 9. Candidates shall make sure that he/she retain his/her Admit card with him/her duly countersigned by the Invigilator concerned after the Common Entrance Test and keep it in safe custody. He/She will be required to produce it at the time of Counseling. He/She may also be required to produce his/her Admit Card at the time of Interviews conducted by shipping companies/their manning agents. Finally, this Admit Card is to be enclosed along with the Proforma for Admission. The candidate may also be asked to produce his/her original testimonials at the time of Counseling at IMU for purposes of verification. However, he/she will have to necessarily produce all original certificates/testimonials at the time of taking admission. No candidate can be admitted directly as the sponsored candidate of Training Institutes. The sponsoring authority will be only the Shipping companies and DGS approved (RSP registered) manning agents. Please see the checklist before sending the Application Form. The sponsored candidates are advised to seek sponsorship only from bonafide Shipping Companies or their duly registered manning agents. The website of DGS has relevant information in this regard and the same may be made use of. Also, it is in the interest of sponsored candidates to possess a letter of sponsorship in their own custody so as to make sure that they are duly sponsored. Such letter of Sponsorship shall clearly mention the name of the candidate, date of birth, fathers/mothers name, the e-mail ID of shipping company/manning agents and their contact telephones etc. The IMU can ask for the production of Sponsorship letter in Original from the candidates admitted as Sponsored candidates, failing which the admission is liable for cancellation. After completion of first round of counseling and allotment of seats, for the subsequent / resultant seats which may arise due to non-joining of candidates, due to being medically unfit, etc., cases, IMU reserves the right to decide whether to allot seats for non-sponsored candidates through counseling or through direct allotment without counseling (based on rank obtained by the candidate in IMU-CET). From the candidates who appear for counseling a non-refundable fee of Rs.10,000/- will be collected by IMU by way of D.D. This non-refundable fee does not form part of the regular course fee to be paid to the Institute at the time of joining the course. The reservation for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and OBC candidates shall be as per Government of India rules. In case of candidates obtaining the same rank in IMU-CET, for admission purpose, their PCM percentage and in case of further tie, their date of birth will be the criteria for allotment of seats. Validity of CET Score is applicable only for Academic Session starting from August 2012.
