A Detailed Lesson Plan in Subtract Numbers with Minuends Up To 20

Mathematics 1
Time Frame: 45 minutes

I. OBJECTIVES
Content Standard The learners should have knowledge and understanding of subtraction
of numbers where both numbers are less than 100.
Performance Standard By the end of the quarter, the learners are able to perform subtraction of
numbers where both numbers are less than 100.
Most Essential Learning The learners
Competencies  illustrate subtraction involving numbers up to 20 using a variety of
concrete and pictorial models, and describes subtraction as “taking
away”;
 find the missing number in addition or subtraction sentences
involving numbers up to 20; and
write an equivalent expression to a given addition or subtraction
expression (e.g., 2+3 = 1+4; 10-5 = 6-1).
Specific Objectives At the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to subtract
numbers with minuends up to 20.

III. PROCEDURE:
Teachers Activity Students Activity
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Greetings
Good Morning Class Good Morning Sir!

2. Prayer
Let us pray first (One student will lead the Prayer)

c. Listen and always look to the teacher.
d. Don’t speak simultaneously.
e. Raise your hand when you have something
to ask and tell.

5. Review
Now, you are going to subtract the given equation.
1. 17 – 7 = ___ (expected answers)
2. 12 – 4 = ___ 1. 17 – 7 = 10
3. 19 – 6 = ___ 2. 12 – 4 = 8
4. 14 – 5 = ___ 3. 19 – 6 = 13__
5. 18 – 8 = ___ 4. 14 – 5 = 5
5. 18 – 8 = 10

Excellent!

6. Motivation

Show the learners stick of popsicle . Ask:

“If I have 10 sticks and I give some to my friend, what

happens to the number of sticks I have?”
(expected answer)
The number of sticks will become smaller.

“Yes! When we take away or remove some objects,

the number becomes smaller. This is what we call
subtraction. Today, we will learn how to subtract
numbers when the big number, called the minuend, is
up to 20.”

B. Lesson Proper

1. Presentation

Now take a look of these words in subtraction:

 Taken Away
 Minuend
 Subtrahend
 Difference
 Minus
 Equal

words class?

2. Discussion

Today, we are going to Subtract Numbers with

Minuends Up To 20.
Expected answer:
Now, complete the table below and do it with a pair.
Expected answers:
The ansswrs for each line (row) are the same.

The answers in each column decrease by 1

from top to bottom.
Very good class! The minuends in each column are the same.
What do you observe about the numbers? The subtrahends in each column increase by 1
from top to bottom.

The answers (difference) are one- digit

numbers.

Expected answer:
We split the minuend into tens and ones, like
for 11 – 2 = 9, we made 11 as 10 and 1. Then,
we take away 2 from 10. This gives us

Expected answer:
15 – 6 = 9

Sir.
Very good! We split fifteen into ten and five. Taking six
Now, let’s try to solve this: away from ten leaves four. Adding four to
15 – 6 = ___ five gives nine.

How did you arrived with your answer? Expected answers:

Yes Nika. 1. 7
2. 6
3. 2
Very good! 4. 8
Okay, we have here another example.
Try to answer these. Yes sir.
1. 12 – 5 =
2. 13 – 7 =
3. 11 – 9 =
4. 16 – 8 =

Did you understand it class?

Very good!

3. Application
Now, for your activity, do this in your paper.
Match the column A to column B.
A B
1. 17 – 8 8 Expected answer:
2. 12 – 9 9 A B
3. 14 – 6 7
4. 13 – 7 3
5. 16 – 9 6

Very good class, you did a great job!

Sir,
First, we split the minuend into tens and

from the tens. Finally, we added the

subtraction sentence?
Yes Mateo.

Very good, you really understand our topic today. Sir.

We use subtraction when we take away things.
For example, if I have 5 candies and I eat 2, I
4. Valuing subtract to know I have 3 left.

Now, how can we apply subtraction in our daily lives?

Yes Nika.

Yes very good Nika!

That’s why we need to know how to subtract things for
us to easily know why a certain amount of thing is
being small when it reduces.

IV. Evaluation

Direction: Match the column A to column B

V. Assignment

For your assignment, that will be pass tomorrow.

Direction: Draw bar illustrations in each of the following item:
1. 10 – 5
2. 15 – 6
3. 14 – 4
4. 11 – 7
5. 13 - 4
