2025 26 Chapter 4 Examples

Chapter Four discusses various examples of vapor power cycles, specifically focusing on steam power plants operating on different Rankine cycle configurations. It includes calculations for thermal efficiency under various conditions, such as changes in pressure and temperature, as well as the impact of isentropic efficiencies. The chapter also covers an ideal steam regenerative Rankine cycle with two feedwater heaters, detailing the determination of mass flow rate and thermal efficiency.

Vapor Power Cycles

Engineering Thermodynamics II

Examples
1. Consider a steam power plant operating on the simple
ideal Rankine cycle. Steam enters the turbine at 3 MPa
and 350°C and is condensed in the condenser at a
pressure of 75 kPa. Determine the thermal efficiency
of this cycle.
Attempt same question with 90% and 80% isentropic
efficiency of the pump and turbine, respectively.

Examples
2. Consider a steam power plant operating on the ideal
Rankine cycle. Steam enters the turbine at 3 MPa and
350oC and is condensed in the condenser at a
pressure of 10 kPa. Determine (a) the thermal
efficiency of this power plant, (b) the thermal
o
efficiency if steam is superheated to 600 C instead of
350oC, and (c) the thermal efficiency if the boiler
pressure is raised to 12.5 MPa while the turbine inlet
o
temperature is maintained at 600 C.

Examples
3. Consider a steam power plant operating on the ideal
reheat Rankine cycle. Steam enters the high-pressure
turbine at 15 MPa and 600oC and is condensed in the
condenser at a pressure of 10 kPa. If the moisture content
of the steam at the exit of the low-pressure turbine is not
to exceed 10.4 percent, determine (a) the pressure at
which the steam should be reheated and (b) the thermal
efficiency of the cycle. Assume the steam is reheated to
the inlet temperature of the high-pressure turbine.

Examples
4. Consider a steam power plant that operates on the
ideal reheat Rankine cycle. The plant maintains the
boiler at 17.5 MPa, the reheater at 2 MPa, and the
condenser at 50 kPa. The temperature is 550°C at the
entrance of the high-pressure turbine, and 300°C at
the entrance of the low-pressure turbine. Determine
the thermal efficiency of this system.

Examples
5. Consider an ideal steam regenerative Rankine cycle with two feedwater
heaters, one closed and one open. Steam enters the turbine at 10 MPa and
600°C and exhausts to the condenser at 10 kPa. Steam is extracted from the
turbine at 1.2 MPa for the closed feedwater heater and at 0.6 MPa for the
open one. The feedwater is heated to the condensation temperature of the
extracted steam in the closed feedwater heater. The extracted steam leaves
the closed feedwater heater as a saturated liquid, which is subsequently
throttled to the open feedwater heater. Show the cycle on a T-s diagram
with respect to saturation lines, and determine:
a. the mass flow rate of steam through the boiler for a net power output
of 400 MW and
b. the thermal efficiency of the cycle.
