Physics Class Policies and Procedures

INTRODUCTION: Physics is a subject, not unlike other subjects that you have taken and succeeded at. Although at times, it may seem confusing, Physics is a very commonsensical science. Occasionally, the mathematics and formulas used in Physics are confusing, but the Physics itself is not!! As Galileo once noted, Physics is a science which is spoken in the language of mathematics. We must therefore use mathematics to communicate our findings with each other. Physicists apply mathematics to the universe in the hope of simplifying its nature. The end results are very simple laws and principles which, if followed, reveal the order and disorder of the physical universe. With this in mind, we shall begin what may be a fascinating year of experiences and thought training, by exploring the world around us and the physical laws that govern it, and then again . . . . . . . POLICIES: Be on time to class!! Please do not chew gum in class. (NO Eating NO Drinking of any sort except water) Be courteous to others in class and your instructor by not talking unless you are asking or answering a question. Keep your books covered at all times. Bring to class every time: Pen or pencil (pencil is preferred for problems) Notebook (keep in it all assignments, notes, labs, etc., and can be shared with another class) Notebook paper or spiral for notes and practice problems. Use any book in physics as for reference. You might consider a clear book for handouts and worksheets. Everyone should own a Scientific Calculator with Scientific Notation (Exponential Notation), Trigonometric Functions (sine, cosine & tangent), Square Root Function, and Inverse Function. Provide your own calculator strictly no borrowing of scientific calculators. Expectations Well have fun in class. Physics is a challenging course for any student. Expect physics to be especially challenging! Homework will be assigned most days. Students will work cooperatively with all students in the class. Students will complete their own work. Grading Policy Homework is due at the beginning of the period. Late homework is not accepted. Quizzes will be given frequently. Check (face book) for assignments and handouts. If you are absent for a quiz, lab, or test you have one week to make up the work. Schedule a time with me before school, during lunch, or after school to complete your makeup work.
