Note: log in with login/password above. This paper must be handed in at the end of the exam session, and save your output file on the F: drive (not in subdirectories or maps). Note: the use of mobiles and USB-sticks is strictly forbidden. You may not leave early. Copy the Word file named AKM1234567-ExamSPSS2010jun.doc from E:\SPSS Data to your own hard drive F: and change the number 1234567 (in the name of that file) to your student number. Do not make errors in these file names! All the output and comment you want to give us goes into this Word file. Do not forget to fill in the first few lines in that file. The PC-number is written on the left or right hand side of your computer. 1) Your comments/answers to questions plus the relevant SPSS output that confirms your findings, should always be copied to this Word file. Hint: occasionally save your results in order not to loose stuff! Be very concise in your comments as otherwise you will run out of time. 2) An answer like Yes or No is never sufficient. You must always make clear how you come to your conclusion and include relevant SPSS output if appropriate.
Exercise 1 (Professors_Pay.txt)
All data can be found on hard disk E:\SPSS Data. First copy all data files to your own hard disk (F:). (a) Read the data from Professors_Pay.txt into SPSS and save it as an SPSS-file before doing any analysis! Make sure you read all variables correctly (especially the decimals). (b) For the variable CIC.institutions create a variable label CIC institutions, for the other variables create the variable labels Average Salary, Full, Associate, Assistant respectively. Note: include a spaces in both labels that contain two words!
(c) From the menu use Analyze | Reports | Case Summaries | and select the variables University, CIC.institutions, average.salary and full.prof.salary and make a summary containing the first 10 rows of these variables. Widen (for readability) the column with the University names such that each case prints exactly as one line. Copy the result to Word. Note: make sure all relevant decimals are included in the output! (d) Make a boxplot of the full professor pay for the CIC and the non-CIC institutions. Make some comment about symmetry, outliers, special cases, etc. based on these boxplots. (e) For this question: do not distinguish between CIC and non-CIC institutions. Compute the five number summary plus the Skewness and Kurtosis of the full professor pay. Would it be OK to use a t-test to test a hypothesis like H0: = 0 ? And if the sample size would have been much smaller? Copy the relevant output to your Word file and include the Notes!
Exercise 2 (Auto-2010.xls)
