Card Tricks : How do they do it? 1. The magician deals 21 cards on the table; into three piles of seven cards each, and asks the spectator to think of any of the cards shown. The spectator is not supposed to tell the magician which card is being thought of, but tells the magician which pile the card is in. This is done three times, and the magician is able to tell the spectator which card they were thinking of. 2. There are two magicians, and they are working together. The rst magician nds a member of the audience and asks them to pick out 5 cards from the deck and hand them back to him. The magician takes a look at the 5 cards, chooses one of them, and hands it back to the audience member, asking him to look at it and hold on to it. This is the secret card. The rst magician then takes the remaining four cards, arranges them in some order and hands them to the second magician, who upon receiving the four cards is able to magically tell everyone what the secret card is! (Hint: Think like a mathematician. If you can do it in theory, thatd be enough.) 1
