(IT) according to the new pattern?
You need to study at least 5–6 hours per day consistently. If you can devote more
time on weekends that will be a plus. Now for the first few months devote 4–5 hours I am working in IT sector, but I can devote 1-2
hours daily for my studies. How much time will it
for theory and 1 hour for question practice (mainly the technical objectives). For take to prepare for GRE?
General studies, study whenever you can find some time be it in office hours or
lunch time. And practice Engineering Aptitude and Maths on every weekend for 2

hours. That will be enough. Then once you master the objective part, gradually start
practicing subjective questions and keep revising the previous theories.

This is the overall strategy. follow if it suits you.

1. General Studies and Engineering Aptitude (Stage 1 Paper1)

UPSC is quite unpredictable. You can't make any presumption that everything in the
question paper will be exactly from what is given in the syllabus. So here are the
possible sources you can prepare from. There are 10 points in the syllabus. So I’m
putting the sources in the same order.

1. Newspaper (preferably The Hindu) will be the best option for this section.
You can also follow sites like gktoday.in , Jagranjosh Exam Prep:
Government, MBA, Engineering, CBSE etc.

2. Engineering aptitude covering logical reasoning and analytical ability should

not be a problem for an average engineer. Find any decent book and
practise. Also you can follow mrunal.org , other useful sites or YouTube
videos for this section.

3. This topic is included in GATE also. Any good book or coaching institute's
notes will suffice.

4. This part will be easy for civil and mechanical engineers. You can take help
from any of your civil or mechanical friends if your branch is ECE or EE or
others. Also this is where coaching institutes come in handy. They provide
good study materials for these types of topics.

5. This is also a part of civil engineering. Follow point 4.

6. Part of civil and environmental engineering. Follow point 4.

7. This is also civil engineering topic. Follow point 4.

8. Materials sciences is a subject in engineering. Shouldn't be a problem.

9. All ECE, CS and IT students should be comfortable with this topic. Rest
branches take help from your friends. I think for domain specific topics like
these UPSC will stick to the basic questions, they won't go into the details.

10. Questions from ethics and values in engineering profession can be solved
with just little bit of research. Think about what UPSC needs in you while
attempting such types of questions like "What is the role of an engineer in
the society?" By seeing the options you can easily guess. You can also take
help from Internet. You'll have a fair idea what this topic is about.

2 & 3. Objective Papers (Stage 1 Paper 2) and Conventional Papers (Stage 2

Papers I & II)

Resources:

1. Class notes from any good institute (study thoroughly)

2. Recommended standard books.

1. For objective: the MCQs provided in the book

2. For Conventional : solved examples and some unsolved questions( if time

allows)

3. Some selected topics.

3. Previous years’ papers of GATE (ECE+EE+ICE: for common subjects)

4. Previous papers of ESE(ECE+EE: for common subjects)

5. PSU papers if possible( not necessary though)

Strategy:

1. Collect the handwritten notes from any good institute. And buy/hire some
standard books.

2. Take one subject at a time. Read the theory from the notes.

3. Finish the subject; mark the topics you didn't understand. Then read them
from any standard book. If you get it, it's fine. If not discuss those with
teachers/friends.

4. Now solve previous years' objective questions for that subject (GATE+ESE
both) and the ones from the standard books (if given). Mark those questions
you could not solve, and then read the corresponding theory from the
notes/books again. You don't have to read the whole book. In fact you wont
get enough time to do that for all subjects. Just read the selected topics and
chapters.

5. Write the formulae in a different sheet which you are unable to recall while
solving the question papers.

6. Then go for previous years' subjective questions. Practice the derivations

repeatedly. Follow 4 and 5 again. And yes don't get panic if you could not
solve some of the questions. Every year there are such types of odd/difficult
questions.

7. Then go for solved examples from the standard books, and if time allows go
for some important unsolved questions from the standard books.

8. Follow the step 7 religiously for at least 5-6 subjects (choose the subjects
as per your liking and previous years' trends). You have to prepare all the
subjects for both objective and subjective papers. But for subjective prepare
those 5-6 subjects with special attention. Because for
conventional/subjective paper you have to be very well prepared in some of
the subjects so that any questions can be solved by you in the examination
hall.

9. Before starting the next subject revise the theory of the previous subject
(preferably the topics and formulae you marked or wrote).

10. And next time before starting the subject 3, revise the subject 1 and 2 and
so on.

11. Join any offline/online test series. It will be very helpful in tracking your
progress. Take the test series seriously and evaluate your weak points.
Work on those areas more.

Yes I know everyone's capacity is different. But still you should not take like 1 month
to finish reading the theory of one subject. Take 7-10 days for the difficult subjects on
an average.Don't try to remember anything when you read for the first time. Just
understand the concept and go ahead. Solve as many questions as possible. That
will help you clear your concepts. Finish the syllabus within the stipulated time and
revise each subject 3-4 times. All the best :)

4. Interview: You should not worry about interview right now. Still I’m giving a brief
overview.

1. Prepare your bio-data well (DAF). You should be aware of every single
word written in it. Be it hobbies, favorite subjects, extracurricular activities
anything.

a. Read about your state/home town/birth place (its importance if any,

recent news etc).

b. Your school/college (if named after anyone famous).

c. If any gap in academic profile, be ready to justify it.

d. Prepare 4-5 subjects well, and know the basics of the rest.

e. Prepare at least 2 hobbies well. Don't write anything in the bio data you
are not aware of.

f. Prepare your current job profile( if any).

g. If you are a fresher, they might ask you about your final year project.
Prepare that.

h. Questions like why you want to leave your previous job/or left (give valid
reasons), why should we hire you, your strength, weakness etc.

2. Know more about the engineering services (various departments for ECE,
your choice, what will be your contribution if you join etc).

3. Prepare current affairs (important ones, mainly national).
