ABSTRACT

Proper modeling of the RC frame shear wall for both linear and non linear analysis of building
structures. In such building lateral load is mainly taken by shear wall and gravity load is taken by
frame therefore proper modeling of shear wall is required before applying linear analysis and
nonlinear analysis. The shear wall is modeled as a layered shell; there the wall is replaced by
ideal frame structure with rigid beam located at each floor level. The aim of the study is to
utilize the performance based design where the building is designed with respect to damage or
certain performance objectives. In linear static analysis the buildings are designed as per UPBD
with predecided drift and performance objectives under the given hazard level. Various
parameters like inflection height, design drift, equivalent damping and base shear are found
out. The shear-wall is designed as per 13920:2016 for the highest moments from any of the five
load combination available in UPBD. Before performing nonlinear analysis, auto default hinges
are assigned to column and beam and user defined hinges are assigned to wall as per FEMA-
356. The effective stiffness reduction factor is incorporate to all the members to take into
account for damage in nonlinear analysis. . Non-linear static push over analysis is applied in the
building and the performance level is evaluated. Non-linear dynamic time history analysis is
applied in the building by using the five SCGM. The achieved inter-storey drift is evaluated and
it should be between the target drift. From this study it is found that UPBD method can be used
for building of any height for any target objectives under the given hazard level. The target
performance level is also achieved after applying nonlinear analysis. The target performance
level is also achieved after applying non-linear static analysis. The inter-story drift evaluated
from non-linear dynamic analysis is within the target drift.
