INTRODUCTION

• Gedex Hospital established in 1983


•Provide medical care to the employees of the Gedex Group of Companies
•Grew as a full fledged hospital and opened for the public
•Healthcare service industry in the country was increasing
•Pharma and diagnostics were also flourishing as an industry
•Corporatization of Hospitals , more comprehensive healthcare rather than just
medication or treatment

Contract Workers
• Support Service Activities – Housekeeping , general duty ,
laundry etc.

CONTRACT WORKERS
•Usually from poor backgrounds & migrated from different states
•Received meager earnings
•Overtime for small extra income
•Found their work Stressful
PROBLEMS BEING FACED BY CONTRACT WORKERS

•Often didn’t get their salaries on time


•Poor work Condition
•Most of them worked more than the legally stipulated time
•Not paid overtime for the extra work
•No breaks between two continuous shifts
•Unaware of their legal leave benefits , exploited by the contractor
•Management reluctant to listen to their Problems
•Neither Management nor the Contractor ready to listen to the issues of the workers
UNIONIZATION
ISSUES REALIZED BY THE CONTRACT WORKERS

•Disparity in their salary and benefits


•Perceived repression and unfair treatment
•No job security

ALL Gedex Employees’ Union

•More than 4000 members


•Represented workers in the manufacturing units run by Gedex group
•Ensured the Salary and other benefits of the workers in the company
UNIONIZATION
• 57 unhappy contract workers became members of the All Gedex
Employees’ Union
• Management swiftly responded by taking these 57 workers onto
1985 the hospital’s permanent rolls

• 83 more contract workers formally joined All Gedex Employees


Union
• Management did not concede their demand for absorption into
1986 GH’s core workforce

• 168 Contractual workers formally became members of INTUC


2002
ROLE PLAYED BY THE UNION AND ITS LEADERS
•Ensured that the workers are being paid by contractors as per the minimum
wages fixed by state govt under Minimum wages act 1948
•Ensured proper treatment of union members in the establishment
•Made members feel that they were special
•Negotiated for fair wages of the workers

EFFECT OF UNIONS ON THE WORKERS

•Complacency of the Union members


•Perceived nobody would touch or question them on performance issues
•Felt no need to work harder
