Teodor Agoncillo’s narration of the first phase of reform and revolution against the Spaniards,

specifically the events prior, during, and after the Tejeros convention, primarily focused on the root
cause and proceeding effects of the partition of the two factions of the Katipunan, Magdalo and
Magdiwang, which was due to the progressive reclaiming of the Spaniards of their territories in Cavite.

On December 13, 1896, Gen. Camilo de Polavieja replaced Gen. Blanco as Governor General due to the
successive defeats of the Spaniards. The former successfully recaptured one-third of Cavite by driving
away rebels and ordering a massacre of civilians thus leading Andres Bonifacio to officially declare
Spanish brutality. This depicts the strategy utilized by the Spaniards in overpowering Cavite – they took
advantage of the vulnerability of rebels and civilians. Just like how the Spaniards decided to replace Gen.
Blanco as Governor-General due to his incompetence, the Magdalo also suggested to form a new
government to take over the position of the Katipunan, thus leading to a rivalry between the two
factions.
